Endless wars, with constantly shifting battle lines and alliances. Something similar was always churning in the background in the George Orwell novel “1984”, with the reporting never referring to earlier phases of this endless war. As the alliances shifted, or the fortunes of war moved back and forth, the story was always written as if a great victory had been achieved, and new allies joined, reported as if they had always been allies.
