In 1961 my dorm was closed for dinners on Sunday evening.
I would drive my 1952 Buick Super with straight-8 engine filled with 2 gallons of gas at $0.19/gallon, to McDonalds.
The burger was $0.15 and fries were $.10. That was my Sunday evening meal, after being overfed in the dorm cafeteria.

Then moved to Chicago for a job, and White Castle burgers were like dime each if I recall correctly. My date and I would splurge on a whole dollar’s worth LOL. I liked going to Ted’s Steakhouse downtown Chicago on State street. The steak dinner was whopping $1.19 complete with salad & potato & bread. Now steak dinner for two is closer to $65.00 without cocktails.

Not any more!

Five Guys here in Reno: Bacon Cheeseburger, $12.75, Regular Cajun Fries, $5.95, and a Chocolate Milkshake, $6.50, which is $25.20 before tax and around $27.37 with local tax.

McDonalds here in Reno: Big Mac, $5.59, Medium Fries, $3.09, and Chocolate Shake, $3.19, which is $11.87 before tax and around $12.90 with local tax.

...and out in Fallon, Nevada, those same fries are $3.99

And that is for one person, imagine a family today!

“I am back to $6-7 for a meal, and it’s better than most restaurants anyway”

Absolutely true. And think of all the tip money you would be paying for crappy service. Not to mention taxes, outrageous prices for drinks, and small/expensive deserts.

We eat most of our meals at home for a small fraction of what it costs to eat out. Over the course of a year this can amount to big savings.

I see just about every vendor using covid as an excuse for everything from prices to supply to service. It is getting old and wearing thin. There was an article about Greed-flation the other day. I see what I think is a lot of that. Holding on to high prices thinking there is no competition. I hope they learn a lesson the hard way.

I also see the restaurant trade suffering in some places. The Thai and Italian restaurants we go to are just plain missing customers. Fast food is not worth it anymore. When out I would stop and get a bite for a treat. I don’t now unless I am too far from home to wait. Just south of $10 for a happy meal is too much. You can just about go to a sit down place and have a better than average meal for that price. 5 for $5.65 and a cherry limeade from Braum’s satisfies my taste for fast food, the used to be $5 just 5 years ago.

I’ll go to Springfield tomorrow and eat out but it is the first time I have left the place in over three weeks.
