Taiwan does not claim independence from China, but rather Taiwan claims to be the one true government of all of China. China has a one China policy that considers Taiwan as part of China.

To consider the absurdity of the Taiwan position, consider that China, population about 1,400 million, is the aproximate size of the United States, and Taiwan, population about 24 million, is the approximate size of Long Island, New York. Try considering a group in exile establishing a government on Long Island and declaring themselves the official government of all the United States.

As a condition imposed for establishing diplomatic relations with China, the United States was required to renounce, and did renounce the recognition of Taiwan as independent. Taiwan's international recognition was withdrawn and it was thrown out of the United Nations for failure to be a sovereign nation state.

If a conflict should erupt between China and Taiwan, it would officially be a civil war or conflict.

China wants Taiwan, but prefers to incorporate it as one whole piece of very valuable real estate, not as the smoking ruins of a military conquest. Somewhat like Hong Kong when the British lease ran out and it reverted to Chinese control.

We do not treat Taiwan as the government of all China. Unofficially, we treat it as if it were an independent state, while formally recognizing that it is not an independent state. If we were to recognize Taiwan as a nation state, that would automatically trigger Chinese complete severance of all diplomatic relations with the United States.

Blinken’s boss, Biden, in perhaps the only positive episode of his stolen administration, has promised that if the Chicoms invade Taiwan we will fight. Xi is on notice, and will not invade unless he someday thinks it is the only way for the CCP to try to stay in power in China.

It would be nice if Jim Hoft were a journalist who was worthy of respect. But regrettably that is not the case.

I mostly agree but while we’ve never explicitly supported independence we supported 2 Chinas. We’ve moved warships into the Taiwan Strait. We’ve sold weapons to the Nationslist govt. In fact the very first aircraft to use Sidewinders in combat were Nationalist F86s which shot down 2 PLA MIGS. Also by explicitly saying we do not support Taiwan independence we now have no justification to oppose and PRC effort to assert its sovereignty.

It’s long past time for the world to recognize that China belongs to Taiwan.

I would say it is long past time for the world to recognize that Taiwan is part of China, and is not an independent state, but they already did that about a half-century ago, recognizing one China and evicting Taiwan from the United Nations.

A_RES_2758(XXVI)-EN.pdf

1957th plenary meeting,
7 October 1971.

2758 (XXVI). Restoration of the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations

The General Assembly,

Recalling the principles of the Charter of the United Nations,

Considering that the restoration of the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China is essential both for the protection of the Charter of the United Nations and for the cause that the United Nations must serve under the Charter,

Recognizing that the representatives of the Government of the People's Republic of China are the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations and that the People's Republic of China is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council,

Decides to restore all its rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations related to it.

1976th plenary meeting, 25 October 1971.

Tony Blinken, “On Taiwan, I reiterated a longstanding US ‘One China’ policy. That policy has not changed. It’s guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, three joint communiques, the six assurances. We do not support Taiwan independence. We remain opposed to any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side. We continue to expect the peaceful resolution to cross-state differences.”

I wonder what was in the letter Biden had Winken Blinken carry to Xi... I also wonder what China has on 'nod the big guy' and how China will help with reelecting democrats? Maybe allow Nod to push them out of Cuba?

Prefer to think that Formosa belongs back with the Japs...
Could even make a case for returning it to Portugal...

Both have a better claim to it than the chicoms, IMHO...

Nothing he said before or after this statement matters.

This is all that was heard by the chicoms and that is what xiden intends.

You nailed it.

This has been in the works since bite-me took office.
Remember the announcement that chip manufacturer Intel (if I recall correctly) was moving it’s operations to Ohio?

And the “one china” policy is actually Taiwan’s. That the only legitimate government is the Nationalist Taiwan government, the ROC. Of course in ‘72 the US stopped supporting that.

Even the US-Taiwan Business Council acknowledges that the PRC's own "One China Principle" recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of China.

And officially speaking, that's been the position of the United States and the UN once Taiwan got kicked out of the UN in the '70s (see post 46).

Where have you been since 2009?
