Human beings do lots of self-destructive things, including a myriad of ways to commit suicide. For ideology, politics, 'honor', and many other related reasons people have flown jetliners into buildings, military aircraft into ships, blown themselves up, jumped to their deaths, started themselves on fire, etc. etc. If the power for Armageddon becomes concentrated in the hand of a crazy few, anything can happen.
