I know a family with 2 kids that have been on this crap for 20 years. They never should have been put on it but will never get off it now
And then one day after a decade of speed… they walk into the Walmart and open fire…
If your kid has ADHD, spanking them won’t do much good.
ADHD is a real thing which involves a deficit of dopamine in our brains. I agree that it shouldn’t be diagnosed without adequate testing/evaluation. However, medication is routinely prescribed for ppl with other dopamine-norepinephrine imbalances such as bipolar disease, so why is it frowned upon for this condition?
“If your kid has ADHD, spanking them won’t do much good.”
Agree, if one considers spanking after they get ADHD, it’s probably too late.
I probably had it when I was a kid in the 40’s early 50’s. The solution then was to double promote me..twice..so I wound graduating from high school at 16. A terrible disservice to me.
Because of know-it-all drug warriors.
Neither, they both have their pros and cons.
Didn’t change mine, and I got spanked plenty, too. I only realized I had ADHD as an adult, when I had a son that was diagnosed. Ritalin and Adderall had benefits and problems.
My son, as an adult now, hates that we put him on those drugs, and I have to say in retrospect that I agree. They were more harmful than helpful. I took Adderall, too. Didn’t help me that much. I’d feel like I could concentrate better, but it also made me more anxious. It was a tightrope walk every day. So glad to be off all of that stuff for over 20 years now. You can’t get me to go near it.
You don’t outgrow ADHD. It’s a part of who you are. The drugs don’t “fix” anything for you, just for others. Real life consequences. when applied quickly and appropriately, like a spanking, do an appropriate job of stopping a kid in his tracks on the way to doing something more harmful.
Kids don’t always think about repercussions and consequences. The drugs might help that a little, but cause other problems down the road. Same as disciplining a kid.
There is no panacea. Life teaches you a lot if you let it.
All this diagnosis for “chemical imbalance” and ADHD, ADD, Alcohol abuse, etc etc. It is extremely important to note that use of these pills and anti-represents and CNS depressants are extremely impactful. Suicides, hyperactivity, recidivism on alcohol and drug abuse. All because of prescribing these ten times too often or too early in life.
Like a buddy of mine, a recovering alcoholic used to say, if we had only known that alcoholism was a Valium Deficiency we could have all been happy.
