Since beginning its eagerly anticipated counteroffensive last week, Ukraine said on Monday that its military units have retaken seven villages along a 100-kilometre (60-mile) front in the southeast from Russian forces. According to a military official, Ukrainian forces have advanced along the frontline in the vicinity of the eastern city.
On Tuesday, small, lightly armoured Ukrainian units appeared to indicate a change in the situation by moving towards Russian defensive positions in southern Ukraine, southeast of Zaporizhzhia. Given Russia’s numerical advantage in men, weapons, and air power as well as the extended period of time it has had to construct extensive defensive fortifications, particularly in southern Ukraine, the task of ending Russia’s invasion of the country’s southern and eastern regions is challenging.
Moscow has not yet formally endorsed any advances made by Ukraine. However, well-known Russian military bloggers claimed that Ukrainian forces were advancing towards the south after capturing Blahodatne, Neskuchne, and Makarivka. Although it hasn’t yet made a significant advancement, the move is already Ukraine’s fastest advancement in the past seven months. Numerous Ukrainian service members who have received Western training and gear are anticipated to take part in the counteroffensive. The victory, one of several roughly similar ones Kyiv has declared this week, is an advancement. Although they have provided few details thus far,
Ukrainian forces have also initiated assaults at other points along the extensive front line to look for Russian weaknesses. Soldiers of the Army of Drones discovered the place from which Russians launched drones in the Svativsko-Kupiansk direction. The Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed enemy positions using Mavic 3 and Mavic 3T drones.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhnyi had a telephone conversation with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a meeting with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi, who is visiting our country to fulfill the agreements reached during the phone conversation between the Head of State and the IAEA Director General on June 6.
“I am glad to welcome you. Thank you for your presence in Ukraine. For responding quickly to challenges,” the President said.
The Head of State emphasized that as a result of Russia’s deliberate undermining of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam, which is the largest crime of ecocide of our time, the risks to the safety of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant have significantly increased. Therefore, a quick and decisive response of the international community to this brazen terrorist act is essential.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy positively noted the presence of the agency’s inspectors at ZNPP, which is illegally occupied by Russia, and welcomed Rafael Grossi’s intention to personally visit the plant to assess the situation on the ground.
The Head of State once again emphasized that the only way to prevent a nuclear incident at Zaporizhzhia NPP is its complete demilitarization, de-occupation and restoration of control over the plant by Ukraine.
During the meeting, the parties discussed specific steps to be taken to minimize risks and prevent incidents at ZNPP, as well as ways to cooperate with the IAEA to this end.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy supported Rafael Grossi’s proposal to send a group of IAEA experts to Ukraine to assess the consequences of the Kakhovka HPP explosion and prepare proposals for specific areas of assistance to overcome them. He emphasized that this mission would be fully facilitated by the Ukrainian institutions involved.

Young couple killed in Russian attack on Kryvyi Rih

Davyd and Kseniia Epelman, both 22 and recently married, were killed in the Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih on the night of 12–13 June.
Davyd and Kseniia got married last year, wrote Svoi.Kryvyi Rih, a local news media.
They celebrated the first anniversary of their wedding on 3 June. Both were teachers.
“Davyd and Kseniia. They were only 22. They were so in love, and they only got married a year ago. They both trained as teachers, the most peaceful profession in the world. Kseniia was a primary school teacher at Gymnasium No. 108. She was an only child.
They both dreamed about having kids. They made plans together. Today a Russian missile took their lives,” wrote Oleksandr Vilkul, Head of the Kryvyi Rih Military Administration.
Anna Iskierdo, a resident of Kryvyi Rih, also wrote about the deaths of Davyd and Kseniia.
“A married couple was killed. He was the grandson of my close family friends. Davyd and Kseniia Epelman will not wake up together again, their mothers won’t embrace them, they will never have children – all because of the [Russian] missiles,” Anna wrote on Facebook.
She shared bank details people can use to donate to help the victims of the Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih.
Danylo Kornilov, 21, was also killed in the Russian attack on the Kryvyi Rih apartment building. He is survived by his wife and their young son.

Many residents of the five-story apartment block have lost their homes following the Russian attack.
Olha Arkhipchenko, a maths teacher from School No. 103 has had her apartment destroyed.
Her former students are fundraising to help Olha.
“This photo shows our coach Yuliia Vysotska’s apartment…Thank God, Yuliia and her family survived. But they are left with nothing…Everything they owned burned down. If anyone can help, let’s help them together,” wrote Antonina Korchenko, who also lives in Kryvyi Rih.
She shared bank details that can be used to help Yuliia and her family.
The local government has promised to house all Kryvyi Rih residents who became victims of Russia’s overnight attack for free in a hostel, which has a kitchen, bathrooms, a laundry room, and a playroom for kids. Food and personal hygiene items will be provided to those who need them.
BACKGROUND: Russian forces carried out a missile strike on Kryvyi Rih on the night of 12–13 June, hitting a five-storey apartment building, killing 11 civilians and injuring 28. Twelve of them have been hospitalised in moderate, severe, or critical condition.
In Kryvyi Rih, 14 June will be a day of mourning for the victims of the Russian attack.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Western countries of failing to comply with the Russian demands concerning the Black Sea Grain Initiative and said that Moscow was considering a withdrawal from the agreement. (The Black Sea Grain Initiative is an agreement brokered by the UN with Russia and Türkiye launched on 22 July 2022 to enable ships to transport grain from Ukraine – ed.)

DETAILS: The Russian president claimed that the West promised Moscow to “liberalise grain supplies to foreign markets” as part of the agreement, including by lifting some of the sanctions introduced following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
“There were many different conditions that the Westerners had to comply with under the UN oversight. Nothing has been done. We are now considering withdrawing from this grain deal,” Putin added.
He also said that Russia extended the Grain Initiative in the past “in the interest of friendly states” that “do not support the West’s aggressive actions and [Western] satellites in Ukraine”.
BACKGROUND: In May 2023, the Black Sea Grain Initiative was extended by two months despite Russia’s threats to withdraw from the agreement.
Later, it was reported that Kyiv might allow the transit of Russian ammonia through Ukraine if it receives guarantees from Russia and the UN that the Black Sea Grain Initiative will operate without obstacles.
