Since beginning its eagerly anticipated counteroffensive last week, Ukraine said on Monday that its military units have retaken seven villages along a 100-kilometre (60-mile) front in the southeast from Russian forces. According to a military official, Ukrainian forces have advanced along the frontline in the vicinity of the eastern city.
On Tuesday, small, lightly armoured Ukrainian units appeared to indicate a change in the situation by moving towards Russian defensive positions in southern Ukraine, southeast of Zaporizhzhia. Given Russia’s numerical advantage in men, weapons, and air power as well as the extended period of time it has had to construct extensive defensive fortifications, particularly in southern Ukraine, the task of ending Russia’s invasion of the country’s southern and eastern regions is challenging.
