VIDEO

Who knew that there are dust devils in Germany? They are quite common in the USA especially on the Plains and in the Southwest but they must be rare in Germany. That could explain the hilarious reactions to the German dust devil in this video. That plus fact that so much stuff is swirling around in a kind of slow motion that evokes a scene out of the "Wizard Of Oz."

TOPICS: Humor; Weather; Weird Stuff
KEYWORDS: dustdevils; germany
The FUnniest Dust Devil I ever saw was at the Roadium Flea Market in Torrance, CA. The Dust Devil came in to the flea market and canopies and chairs went up into it. But what made it truly HILARIOUS was that the Dust Devil hit a stand where somebody was selling thousands of sports cards. When it hit almost all of them went up into the Dust Devil and with so many cards actually gave definition to that Dust Devil. Meanwhile the vendor was angrily running after the Dust Devil shaking his fist and screaming at it in some foreign language (maybe Armenian). Too bad I didn't record that scene but was years before everybody had a cell phone with the inevitable cameras.

We get some big ones here in New Mexico. One lifted a just-emptied plastic above ground pool and dropped it on some high-voltage power lines near us a few years back. Over 100 feet up.

Yup! I know. I lived there for a few months and saw several big Dust Devils.

Our inflatable pool got picked by one, floated across the yard like a flexible vinyl UFO, and was deposited into this huge cholla that was in the corner of our yard. RIP inflatable pool. It was empty at the time.

Another time our neighbor’s house got hit by pieces of a hot tub gazebo that went airborne from their next door neighbors.

And another time someone down the street lost a tent. It ended up a few doors down.

The wind in New Mexico is serious business.

We would get them at my school playground and all the kids tried to run in to them when they came through. Fun times.

Honestly, around here, not so much. The electric utility wasn't thrilled about it. But it didn't knock out power.
