Garvey might be the Republicans' best chance to get a Republican candidate on the November 2024 ballot. So far he's the most well known Republican considering running for Senate.

Can residual popularity from being a sports star, overcome the Democrat advantage in California? Time will tell.

California would probably prefer a catcher than a first baseman.

With the Jungle primary the Republicans need to decide who has the best shot and only have that person on the ballot. If they split the vote in any way they lose. Only hope is that the Dems have a lot of candidates splitting their vote. Then again if the Dems split to many ways it may be an opportunity to limit Rs to two good ones.

You’d have to go back a generation — to 1988 — to find the last time a Republican candidate won a U.S. Senate race in heavily Democratic California.

You'd also have to go back a generation to find people in California who remember Steve Garvey. His window for office was open back in the early '90s - he should have taken it then.

IIRC his wife or ex-wife accused him of being abusive towards her. So, he’s done before gets out of the gate.

Garvey might be a "Republican". But when you start fund raising with Michael Steel. Republican is a word that should be used very loosely.

Garvey retired from baseball 36 years ago at has not played for the Dodgers for 40 years. A voter would have to be at least 45 to even remember Garvey playing ball.

In California, 79% of voters are under the age of 46.

My husband did a bunch of work for Mr. Garvey and if he runs he will be getting our maximum contribution! He’s a very good man who does business on a handshake and can be trusted to do what he says he will do!

I don’t know much about his politics but, as a kid, I used some of his training techniques to generate a lot more wrist action in my swing and it totally worked!

He’s so far removed from MLB, I doubt it would matter that much. Most young people won’t even know who he is.

He’s 74. He’d be over 80 when up for re-election.
