You’d have to go back a generation — to 1988 — to find the last time a Republican candidate won a U.S. Senate race in heavily Democratic California. This time, the party might get an MVP on the ballot.
Baseball legend Steve Garvey, who played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, is meeting with voters and senior GOP officials as he weighs a potential 2024 Senate bid in a race that already has several prominent Democratic contenders in the field. He appeared at a recent fundraiser for Republican Rep. Michelle Steel in Orange County, where he signed baseballs and talked about his potential candidacy.

Steve’s base are SoCal white dude baseball fans over age 50 who are not still mad that he left the Dodgers for the Padres
I just dropped being a Dodger fan, but still have fond memories of those great teams with Garvey. In 1984, who do YOU start at 1st Base? An aging Steve Garvey, or Pedro Guerrero. If you move Pedro to OF, who do you sit down? I have no beed with Garvey wanting to play, nor with Ron Cey going to the Cubs.

Then there’s Cindy-crazy.
You gotta wonder about a woman who leaves a handsome MLB star for a piano player. That's like Marilyn Monrow leaving Joe DiMaggio for a playwright. And Joe truly loved her, Miller, not so much.

With the Jungle primary the Republicans need to decide who has the best shot and only have that person on the ballot. If they split the vote in any way they lose.Yes, indeed...I just hope that a GOP candidate does end up in the November run-off...I do not want to choose between two Democrats in November...

California would probably prefer a catcher to a first baseman.
Garvey may be both. wink-wink

You'd also have to go back a generation to find people in California who remember Steve Garvey.
In LA, maybe. Their fans know nothing about their franchise. They only want to fight in the stands.
San Diego fans know Garvey.

He’s so far removed from MLB, I doubt it would matter that much. Most young people won’t even know who he is.
To: chrisinoc
He’s 74. He’d be over 80 when up for re-election.
