I don't know why Russia didn't roll out their heavy bombers and carpet bomb Bakmut. It would have saved a lot of lives and time and the end result would have been the same.

The same reason they don't use them anywhere else near the front lines. They would be shot down. Had Russia been able to assert anything close to air superiority, the war would have been over long ago.

Because they dont want to have any more A/C shot down. They dont own the sky, never did in this conflict.

Because they would all have been shot down - its what modern Anti-Air batteries do.

As it is, those same bombers cannot approach Ukraine closer then the Caspian Sea or deep inside Belarus and Russia.
