My employer sucked up to the states and requires me to put my zip code on the work items and hours. The consequence is that I'm required to file income taxes for any state where I work more than 3 days in a year. I eschew travel for that reason. Often, the cost of TurboTax state and electronic filing for the state exceeds the taxes that were collected. It's a paperwork nosebleed. In cases where I spent more significant time, I paid a ton of taxes to a state where I am not a resident. Taxation without representation. In fairness, when I was a resident of CA and paying taxes, it was still taxation without representation.
