I have had a google voice number for years. If you use the dreaded GMail then you can get one. While logged onto Gmail. https://voice.google.com/ Just do a search for Google voice. Then select a phone number with your area code. Easier done on your computer.
When you have done all this, you can also install Google voice on your phone. For the past two years my phone has two phone numbers.
Only problem was that I got lots of spam phone calls on the Google Voice number.///
For the last week I just got one. I can only conclude that Google FINALLY cleaned up Google Voice. Hooray!

Thanks for this information as I have to get one of those numbers to give people I don’t want to give me real number to!
Be careful not to port that GV number to ooma or any other competitor. It will cost you money to get your original GV number back with GV should it not work out for you. I tried Ooma and it was terrible. We use our GV number as a biz number.
I lost SMS capability with Ooma as well as a number of features. which they wanted extra for. I now have to subscribe to the dreaded Google workspace/office which I don’t use any of the features except for the voice phone number.
I also lost my ability to ring my “deskphone” for incoming calls using an obihai box. I can still make outbound calls on the POTS phone with the connected GV number, though.

Correct! Any more info you need, just ask.
At home be sure your phone is hooked into yr wifi for google voice. Then it costs you nothing!
When outside, Google Voice will eat into your data plan. But not that much
“obihai box”
I used one for years for my google voice number. But then my obihai box became obsolete. So now I get Goog Voice via my Samsung android 13 phone when I am at home, or out and about.
I have the GV app on my Samsung Note 20 as well which is where I get most of my calls. We don’t have a landline but live in an area where there is poor cell phone signals.
I have a wifi booster from my carrier but it’s nice to have a POTS desk phone hooked up to VOIP via the obihai since I’m home more (semi retired).
When I got GV via my now obsolete obihai. Which plugged right into my router
... It was better that than getting it via wifi via my Samsung phone. Fewer drop-offs.
Thanks for the heads-up about wifi and data!
