Trump seems spiteful enough to run third party/independent if DeSantis (or anyone else) beats him in the GOP primary next year. I think he will flip his lid if he loses.

Two main answers to that:

First, Trump received a lot of votes in 2016 and 2020 from non-traditional Republican voters.

Second, many conservatives believe they have been repeatedly defrauded, betrayed and taken for granted by the warmongering, open borders Bush wing of the GOP and will never again hold their noses and vote for a RINO. You are free to believe that is stupid; opinions will vary but I think we can all agree that viewpoint has more than enough conservative support to torpedo an insufficiently MAGA candidate in the general.
