George Harrison, the Youngest Beatle, Would Have Turned 80 Today

Biography: English musician, singer and songwriter who became famous as the lead guitarist of the Beatles.

Most Beatles albums included at least one Harrison song, including "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"; "Here Comes the Sun"; and "Something", which became the Beatles' second-most-covered song. His exploration of Indian music and meditation were evidenced in some of his songwriting.

After the break-up of the Beatles, he began his solo career with the landmark "All Thing Must Pass" album. In response to refugee strife in Bangladesh, he organized an all-star benefit concert at Madison Square Garden (NYC) in 1971 that served as a proto-type for future such events.

He co-founded the movie production company HandMade Films, producing and distributing films such as "Life of Brian"; "Time Bandits'; "Mona Lisa"; and "Withnail and I".

After some time away from making albums, he had a commercial resurgence in the late 1980s with his release "Cloud 9", and formation of the super-group the Traveling Wilburys.

He was married twice - to British model Pattie Boyd from 1966-77, and to American record label executive Olivia Arias from 1978 until his death, with whom he one son, musician Dhani Harrison.

He was also elected to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice - with the Beatles (2008), and posthumously as a solo performer (2004).

I think his “All Things Must Pass” album was the best post Beatles album of all.

I happened to be looking at a stack of popular music books at the library a long time ago and opened one about the Beatles to a page where George Harrison talked about how he and the others were working on meditation and that they believe they are adding years to their lives. Late 1960s.

He had already been gone for a long time when I read the quote and it seemed poignant to think of how sad it is that it wasn’t true. No one really knows the future.

This is mine, but there's a long, embarrassing story behind it that I won't go into (ex-girlfriend):

Why didn’t Paul, the biggest beetle, simply not eat the other beetles?

RE: All Things Must Pass.
It was said all the Harrison songs passed over and excluded for space considerations from the various albums meant he had accumulated a lot of ones waiting to be heard.
From FarOutMagazine UK—
However, in a poetic twist of justice, Harrison’s All Things Must pass would prove to be the best-selling record for a Beatle gone solo – it sold more than Lennon’s Imagine and McCartney and Wings’ Band on the Run combined.

3,669,000 sales as of recent figures.

Makes sense. Beatles albums were dominated by Lennon/McCartney compositions. George obviously had a lot of gems saved up.

Never was a Beatles fan, but I loved George - especially in the Wilburys.

Here’s a song for George, by Jeff Lynne, about George.

The only Harrison vinyl I have (other than Beatles) is “Cloud 9” - a pretty damn good record.

Here’s another one:

The film is exactly like the goofy crap I created on my 8mm camera when I was 10...and probably why I hold this song dear.

Ringo has always been my favorite since my kindergarten friends and I discovered one of my friends’ mothers’ The Beatles 45 records and realized we loved that stuff. We did little air band gigs to the records and I played tackle box. I’ve been a rock n roller, blues, metalhead ever since. I remember my first step up was when I was 8 or 9 years old and discovered Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and all that wonderfulness, then at 10 years old was able to discover AC/DC and Motörhead and the 80s metal revolution that came from classic metal, which also led me to punk, and then to even grasp some of the 80s new wave like the GoGo’s. Man, I’m so happy I grew up with rock n roll and metal. Next weekend Anvil will be here, and I’ll see some members of Venom and Angel Witch for some beers and fun along with the gigs too.

Lest I digress too much, for me, George Harrison’s best work was with The Traveling Wilburys outside of his The Beatles classics. Thank you George for (some of) your wonderful music.
