Russia’s Large Reported Daily Death Tolls Show No Signs of Slowing Down
By David Brennan
2/17/23 at 4:55 AM EST

Ukraine’s armed forces on Friday reported another 800 Russian soldiers killed in action, bringing Kyiv’s total claim of invaders killed since February 24, 2022, to 141,260—an unconfirmed figure that nonetheless suggests severe casualties for Moscow’s units.

Kyiv has been releasing its account of enemy losses since the first days of the full-scale invasion, which is now approaching its one-year anniversary with no end in sight.

Though it is not possible to verify the true numbers of dead and wounded on either side, Ukraine and its Western partners believe Russia has incurred serious casualties stretching into the hundreds of thousands. Newsweek has contacted the Russian defense ministry for comment.

Friday’s reported 800 dead fits into a recent pattern of mounting Russian losses, coinciding with the beginning of Moscow’s long-awaited spring offensive it hopes will overwhelm Ukrainian defenders and capture the remainder of the partially occupied Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.

Last weekend, Ukraine reported the highest daily figure of Russian KIA (killed in action) since the start of the invasion—1,140 personnel—which itself topped the daily record of 1,030 KIA claimed only days before.

Though unconfirmed, Ukrainian figures generally chime with the estimates of their foreign partners. Western officials believe that close to 200,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded since February 2022, according to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal.

Russia does not regularly disclose its own casualty figures. Moscow has not updated its official public death toll since September 2022, when it claimed to have lost just under 6,000 troops fighting in Ukraine.

The Pentagon has predicted that Russia will continue to take high casualties as it pushes its new offensive in eastern and southeastern Ukraine. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said this week that Moscow “continues to pour large numbers of additional people into the fight.”

“Those people are ill-trained and ill-equipped, and because of that, we see them incurring a lot of casualties. And we’ll probably continue to see that going forward. That’s their strength. They have a lot of people.”

The British Ministry of Defense, meanwhile, said last weekend that the “uptick in Russian casualties” in recent weeks is likely a result of a “lack of trained personnel, coordination, and resources across the front.”

Ukrainian units, the ministry added, are also likely suffering a “high attrition rate” in the high-intensity battles around key objectives like Bakhmut, Kreminna, and Vuhledar.

Ukraine closely guards its casualty figures. Kyiv has acknowledged around 13,000 deaths since February last year.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have both suggested a total of around 100,000 casualties on the Ukrainian side, though this may be a cumulative figure of killed and wounded for both military and civilians.

1. Ukrainian Forces Eliminate Russian Troops Frontline Trenches and Residence in Donetsk Region

On the eastern front, Ukraine had its most challenging week of the year, but its defenders still managed to cause more damage to Russian forces while exerting a lot of effort to hold onto key areas, like a coal-mining town that has come to represent both sides. According to reports, British Army and other national experts in trench warfare, urban combat, and international law of armed conflict trained with Ukrainian volunteers who are now trench warfare experts. Even though it was extremely costly, the Russian military overcame fierce Ukrainian resistance to make a tiny bit of progress just outside the town with only 14,000 residents. As Russia learns how to fight better, their winter counterattack in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine keeps Ukrainian troops from moving around.

Oh it’s time for the Ukrainian propaganda show!

It’s disgusting you people try to equate Putin with Hitler because ONE OF THEM killed 10’s of millions of Jews, and the other didn’t.

If Zelensky hadn’t been shelling his own people in Donbas, Putin would not have intervened. But, NATO wants WWIII so Ukrainian lives are simply forfeit in the effort.

I pray Zelensky and his neo Nazi military are swiftly and completely destroyed, and that the Ukrainian citizens he harmed can return to the Ukraine and somehow make lives for themselves, even though Zelensky and Co destroyed most of the men between the ages of 16 and 60 or so. The citizens didn’t deserve this abuse - and Zelensky has lovely mansions waiting for him when the farce collapses.

I did. I read it everyday and Wagner was fighting and making more gains north of Bakhmut. You shouldn’t believe all the bs posted by both sides, and just read the maps to determine who is actually winning. Both sides are killing a lot of soldiers.

First group of Ukrainians completed training at US base in Germany

by Mike Brest, Defense Reporter
February 17, 2023 04:05 PM

he first Ukrainian battalion completed its training in Germany by U.S. forces this week, the Pentagon announced on Friday.

Roughly 635 Ukrainian service members completed the approximately five-week combined arms training on the M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle at Grafenwoehr Training Area, and another group is already being trained, Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement on Friday afternoon.

Roughly 710 Ukrainian troops have already begun training at Grafenwoehr on the M2 Bradley vehicles two weeks ago, while a field artillery battalion began training at the same time on the M109 Paladin, a self-propelled howitzer that the US recently announced it will send to Ukraine.

Another 890 Ukrainian forces, a second field artillery battalion, and a Stryker battalion will begin receiving instruction on the M1126 Stryker next week, marking the first unit that will receive such instruction.

The 7th Army Training Command is leading the training, which is being overseen by U.S. European Command, U.S. Army Europe and Africa, and the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine.

“It represents a continuation of a worldwide effort led by the U.S. and supported by more than 50 nations to help Ukraine defend itself from Russia’s brutal and unprovoked war, which began nearly one year ago,” Ryder added.

Ukraine is expected to launch a counteroffensive in the coming weeks looking to liberate occupied territory, while Russia is planning to do the same.

The Biden administration has provided Ukraine with roughly $27 billion of military aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded nearly a year ago. While President Joe Biden has repeatedly reaffirmed his commitment to aiding Ukraine, he has been hesitant to provide certain weapons, while the U.S. and other European countries have sought to train Ukrainians on the weapons they’re getting.

“Russia’s central bank says falling rouble driving inflation higher”

https://www.kitco.com/news/2023-02-17/UPDATE-1-Russia-apos-s-central-bank-says-falling-rouble-driving-inflation-higher.html

Today, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Russia’s central bank said on Friday that inflationary pressures across the economy had remained strong during the first two weeks of February, citing a slump in the rouble as a factor. Russia’s central bank said on Friday that inflationary pressures across the economy had remained strong during the first two weeks of February, citing a slump in the rouble as a factor. Russia recorded inflation of 11.8% on an annual basis in January, almost three times the central bank’s official 4% target. It signalled last week it was preparing to raise base interest rates to cool inflation.

“Operational data for the first two weeks of February indicate the trend towards increased price pressures continues,” the bank said on Friday in a report.

Prices across Russia have been extremely volatile in the year since Russia invaded Ukraine - with a period of rapid inflation following the imposition of Western sanctions followed by months of deflation as capital controls pushed the rouble higher.

But falling revenues from crucial oil and gas sales have again hit the Russian currency this year. The rouble has fallen 16% since the start of December, when a European Union embargo and G7 price cap on Russian crude sales came into force.

“The exchange rate has already affected (prices of) the most import-dependent products in January, and if the rouble remains at its current level, this will continue to have a pro-inflationary effect in the coming months,” the bank’s analysts said in the report.
