Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, ATGMs, MANPADS, loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles, trailers and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it is not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

“New Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine ‘more aspirational than realistic,’ say Western officials”

“As Russia begins a new offensive in eastern Ukraine, the US and its allies are skeptical Moscow has amassed the manpower and resources to make significant gains, US, UK and Ukrainian officials tell CNN. “It’s likely more aspirational than realistic,” said a senior US military official.

Russia has been increasing the number of forces situated on its border and inside Russian-held territory in Ukraine, some of the forces drawn from a partial mobilization ordered in September last year. Despite the increased numbers, Western allies have not seen evidence of sufficient changes to those forces’ ability to carry out combined arms operations needed to take and hold new territory.

“It’s unlikely Russian forces will be particularly better organized and so unlikely they’ll be particularly more successful, though they do seem willing to send more troops into the meat grinder,” a senior British official told CNN.“

“John Chipman’s Military Balance launch event remarks”

“Today we publish The Military Balance 2023 and deliver conclusions from our Military Balance Plus database, in a year dominated by Russia’s ill-judged decision to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. So far, the war has been a political and military failure for Russia. Moscow hoped its forces would sprint to victory, but they are in a grinding war.
The invasion has recast the security environment in Europe. The geopolitical centre of gravity has moved to the east and to the north. NATO has found renewed purpose and will almost certainly in 2023 gain two new members in Finland and Sweden. Sharpened security fears have led several European states to renew their defence spending commitments and focus on improved military capabilities. Ukraine has become Europe’s front line. “

“After announcing at the end of last month that Northrop Grumman and Global Military Products would compete for $522.3 million worth of orders to produce 155 mm artillery munitions, the Army said Tuesday that both companies would be awarded contracts to aid Ukraine in its war with Russia.
A Jan. 30 Defense Department contract award notice states that both companies would compete for each order of a firm, fixed-price contract for the procurement and delivery of the rounds.

The Army said in a press release Tuesday that the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology’s Joint Program Executive Office for Armaments and Ammunition awarded the orders on Jan. 30 to both companies to manufacture the ammunition.

According to the Army, money is being awarded against a “competitive multiple-award indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract for non-standard ammunition.”
The contract is being funded under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative with deliveries expected to begin next month, according to the Army.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said earlier Tuesday that billions of dollars’ worth of weapons are headed to Ukraine due to an anticipated “spring offensive.”

Additionally, the Army’s top acquisition official Doug Bush has said that multiyear contracts and contract modifications will be part of a strategy to ramp up production of munitions such as Stingers, Javelins and 155 mm Excalibur rounds as the war rages on.

To date, the United States has committed $29.3 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the conflict began about a year ago.”

“It’s important to distinguish between Kremlin intent for a new offensive this spring, which is clear, and their capability for doing so. Even as they move pieces around the board, the Russian military remains a damaged force with a lowered combat potential.”

“Not seeing much evidence of an additional spring offensive. The Russian offensive has been in progress for several weeks now. So far, its decidedly underwhelming. They are likely to feed additional forces into these axis of attack, but beyond that I’m skeptical.”

“Vuhledar 16.02 - 9:30 AM Update 1/7 The situation in the Vuhledar area remains stable, however, the enemy doesn’t seem to reduce the pressure despite losses. The tactics remain the same: advancing infantry groups covered by tank and artillery fire.

2/7 The armored vehicles are used for the cover, delivery, and evacuation of infantry. The enemy actively uses tanks from closed positions, while sheer numbers of enemy artillery suppress our artillery, allowing their groups to move closer.

3/7 Alongside infantry reinforcements, the enemy continues to saturate the area with additional artillery. To improve their tactical situation, russian assault groups attempt to establish a foothold near the Vuhledar, albeit with no results.

4/7 Despite the overwhelming numerical advantage of russian occupational forces, Ukrainian forces in the area demonstrate superiority. A big role in it was played by the successful implementation of elements of the Western, NATO-like governance system - mission command.

5/7 Unlike the foe, Ukrainian soldiers and officers can make necessary changes and determine the best course of action on the battlefield based on judgment, initiative, and creativity. This is a far superior system that needs to be indoctrinated more.

6/7 Sadly, this is not always the case in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as it’s not easy to get rid of the soviet-style command system entirely. A small soviet army can’t defeat a large soviet army, which is why we need to emphasize the decentralized approach.

7/7 In my next update, I will provide a few examples to demonstrate why this approach works better and how the combination of western weaponry and the western approach can ensure better outcomes for us in this war.”

“Germany ‘blocking’ equipment for Paks reactors, Hungarian minister says“

“Hungary’s foreign minister on Tuesday said that the German government was “blocking” a permit to allow Siemens Energy to ship control equipment for the new reactors Russia’s Rosatom is building at Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant.
Siemens has a contract for delivering the equipment, together with French company Framatome, but a statement from Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto that while France has granted the necessary permit the Germany has not.
Hungary plans to expand its Paks nuclear plant, with Rosatom building two 1.2 gigawatt VVER reactors in addition to the existing four reactors.

The much-delayed project was awarded to Rosatom in 2014 without a tender. That has often been cited as a sign of warm ties between Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Russian President Vladimir Putin.”

I’m rewatching season one of Perry Mason on HBO. In the second episode, there is the most harrowing depiction of battle I’ve ever seen on film — this one being World War I.

Patch was right. This was legalized mass murder…
