-Moldovan government resigns, economy in turmoil.
-Tensions with Russia fuelled by war in Ukraine.
-President to hold consultations on next prime minister.
CHISINAU, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Moldova's pro-Western government resigned on Friday after a turbulent 18 months in power marked by economic turmoil and the spillover effects of Russia's war in neighbouring Ukraine.
In the latest tensions with Moscow over the war, the government said shortly before Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita announced her resignation that a Russian missile had violated Moldovan airspace, and summoned Russia's ambassador to protest.
President Maia Sandu accepted Gavrilita's decision and said she would consult with parliamentary groups on nominating a new prime minister. She gave no sign of abandoning her pro-Western policies that include seeking European Union accession. "Thank you so much for your enormous sacrifice and efforts to lead the country in a time of so many crises," Sandu wrote on Facebook.
"In spite of unprecedented challenges, the country was governed responsibly, with a lot of attention and dedicated work. We have stability, peace and development - where others wanted war and bankruptcy."

For those who think Putin has expansionist aims beyond Ukraine, forget Poland, take a look at Moldova.
Last year Lukashenko stupidly revealead Putin’s plans to invade Moldova. It’s no secret.
Is her name, “Mulva?”
Dolores.
It’s important for the people in Moldova to be reminded what happens in their country is none of their business.
We’ll decide what’s best for them.
Sandu is next.
He believes he is destined by God to reform the 1914 borders.
Does Moldova have Russian enclaves?
Did the “ government” quit…or just the PM?
Very misleading headline
“Does Moldova have Russian enclaves?”
It does, and those areas have been controlled by armed Russian occupiers since the fall of the USSR.
The majority of Moldovans would like to reunite with Romania (Moldovans speak Romanian) especially since that would be an easy way into the EU and NATO.
Generally when a PM resigns it’s seen as the government resigning... the President then can form a new government.
Sounds like they have separatists on both sides. These ethnic divisions should have been paid more heed to when the USSR fell... which is of course also Putin’s point.
“Sandu is next.”
Do you support the pro-Putin party in Moldova which is literally named the “Bloc of Communists and Socialists?”
And the idea that Moldovans want to reunite with Romania is based on what?
Another question. The the reunion of Moldova and Romania is a good thing, even though the majority or Moldovans support their independence, but the reunion of Donhas and Crimes is a no-no even though the people don’t want to hear about Ukraine?
Possible that it has some Russian minorities but I’ve never tried to check.
Do the Moldovans?
Are they “ allowed” to choose?
“Do you support the pro-Putin party...”
I have no right to have a say in their matters, and unless you are a Moldovan neither do you.
Now Putin will come to the protection of the Transnitrian people.
I wonder how many troops they’ve sneaked into that place?
Yep, we’ve seen this movie before.
” These ethnic divisions should have been paid more heed to when the USSR fell”
When the British Empire fell the British were smart enough to head home from their colonies.
The KGB was intent on keeping some hold on their former empire so they left stay-behind forces in all the former areas.
Liberal Europe has been much to kindly to these enemies within, and they should all be sent back to Russia.
