That is just north of the great Jordan and African rift.
Eventually, the Rift may split, like it has in east Africa, and a new sea will form.
If it fails, then it will continue to produce smaller as well as very large Earthquakes
The earthquake near Buffalo NY this day was a result of the Great Mid Continental Rift-N American Rift. It is continuing to spring back from the glaciers from about 12 to 14 thousand years ago which depressed the ground from weight.
All the earthquakes from Texas to the top of it in Lake Superior and back down along the shores of Lake Huron and down to Alabama can be attributed to that rebounding action-its like a giant horseshoe shape.
The rift valley is actually the Mississippi River valley.
One can stand ON THE CRUST of the earth at Eagle Harbor in the UP of Michigan...meaning if you try and dig to get underneath that rock, you would have to go under the earths crust. It tilts (exposed rock) to Isle Royal there, and on Isle Royal..it tilts to the Upper Peninsula. Lake Superior is the valley there at that point.
