Has been the nato position towards russia since its inception. So its not a provocation...stop the pearl clutching...

It is not at all provocative talk. In fact, it’s exactly what NATO should be saying. It is neither a threat nor a sign of weakness, BOTH of which are far more apt to cause an escalation. NATO is merely saying it is prepared for any move made against it. Strategically ambiguous.
