Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, ATGMs, MANPADS, loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles, trailers and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it is not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

“Canada considering sending 4 Leopard tanks to Ukraine: sources”

“Canada is considering contributing four Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, senior sources told CBC News — but no decision has been made.

The government could announce the donation of tanks as early as Thursday, the sources said.”

Planning or studying? The French….

“France plans to send Leclerc tanks to Ukraine”

“France continues to study the possibility of sending its Leclerc heavy tanks to Ukraine, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said on Wednesday.

The French tanks are similar to the German Leopard tanks that Berlin agreed to supply to Kyiv on Wednesday, but there are far fewer French tanks, which will present various maintenance and logistical challenges.

“We are continuing to analyze the Leclerc tanks with the Ministry of the Armed Forces,” said E. Borne on Wednesday when questioned on this subject in Parliament. “The question of aid to Ukraine is not limited to this or that weapon.””

“Thread. It’s good news that NATO members will provide modern tanks to Ukraine. Tanks remain a critical component in ground warfare, and Ukraine has the most experienced tank crews in the world. However, we should be realistic about what these deliveries mean.

Ukraine’s goal is to retake all of its territory occupied by Russia. Breaking through well-prepared defensive lines (and exploiting success) is difficult without significant combined arms advantages, and Ukraine is unlikely to have air superiority. 2

Challenger 2, Leopard 2, and Abrams are more survivable and have better optics and fire control systems. That will give Ukrainian tankers an advantage in tank-on-tank fights and other engagements, and tank crews will be more likely to survive (and keep fighting). 3/

These new tanks also open up a new line of ammunition available to Ukraine, which is critical since they have been using tanks as artillery. Procuring 3 new types of tanks will be a logistical headache, but it will also give them more options for replacing future tank losses. 4/

Tanks will undoubtedly play a key role in Ukraine’s future offensives as in Kharkiv and Kherson. The new tanks will increase Kyiv’s chances for success but not guarantee it. They are just one component of combined arms, and can only partially compensate for other weaknesses. 5/

Personally, I think deliveries of new IFVs and APCs, like the Bradley and Stryker, are more significant than tanks because Ukraine lacks enough IFVs/APCs and the relative improvement of a Bradley/Stryker over BMP-1/MRAP is even greater than Leopard 2 over many Ukrainian tanks. 6/

The question is whether the decision by NATO to provide tanks signals that the alliance may be willing to consider other systems needed by Ukraine in the future. These tanks are also another step in the Ukrainian military being equipped with NATO weapons. 7/

So this is good news, but NATO tanks are not a silver bullet. If NATO’s goal is to help Kyiv so that it can retake all of its territory, this will likely need to include other systems like fighters and ATACMS to improve Ukraine’s combined arms capabilities even more. 8/

This is particularly true if continued attrition in Bakhmut and elsewhere along the front weakens Ukrainian units that will need to be available for offensives later this year. 9/”

I guess the only thing worse than high priced arms, is no arms.

“A rare glimpse into covert arms sales world: How Western companies make a fortune on brokering deals for Ukraine”

“When Russia unleashed its all-out war in February last year, Ukraine urgently needed weapons and ammunition to defend itself.

Desperate for arms, the country was ready to buy at any cost, a top-ranking Ukrainian official involved in the hunt for weapons in the first weeks of the war told the Kyiv Independent.

European private arms dealers saw an opportunity and drove the prices of their services up. In one specific case, the Kyiv Independent and partners found that one broker took three to six times the market average for mediation.”

“Some Western brokers compare the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Whereas in the early days of the coronavirus crisis, traders were looking for masks en masse, now arms dealers from all over the world are chasing weapons and ammunition to send to Ukraine,” says one of the eight European arms dealers we spoke to for this story anonymously.”

By the time the French would need to use Tanks, they would probably only need “reverse” drive trains.

Shut down the flights.

“The U.S. is pressuring Turkey to stop Russian airlines from flying American-made jets to and from the country. A top U.S. official issued a warning that Turks could risk fines & jail time for servicing export-controlled Boeing 777s, 737s and others:”

“We looked at flight records that show that Russian airlines flew more than 2,100 flights to Turkey since last Oct. 1, including regular trips to Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya etc from Moscow and other Russian cities.”

“This warning is an early test of whether the US and European allies can convince third countries like Turkey (also China, India, Gulf states) to do more to isolate Russia, or whether Moscow can continue to find economic partners outside of the west in defiance of sanctions.”

There appears to be a shortage of RuZZian missiles and Iranian drones. That’s why there isn’t an attack on Ukraine every day, but every couple/weeks apart.

M1 tanks will be heading to Ukraine, but they can’t just be pulled from U.S. stocks due to their sensitive armor.

Not as simple as it seems on first look.

Summary:
[The problem is that the hull and turret armor have highly classified and are made with DU and ceramics. The only sources of available tanks would have to come from current operators of export models like Egypt and and Saudi, which for diplomatic reasons are not likely to send.

All storage models in US have classified armor. The Army is currently looking to sole-source removal work to General Dynamics Land Systems. There are no other current contractors qualified to remove DU armor, and it would take an estimated 64 months to get one up to speed. The alternative is to make new M1A1Ms for export which will take years.

M1A1s that go to Poland and other NATO countries are not the same armor-wise as US forces use, and not what the Russians would be facing even if they where to take an export model out.]

So scratch M1A1s off the list of MBTs that will be arriving in Ukraine for the foreseeable future.

———————————————————————————————————————
••Day 336.

Today the biggest news is coming from the Zaporizhzhia region.

As expected, the Russians tried to launch yet another offensive operation, attacked Vuhledar, which turned out to be the most difficult operation that the southern Russian forces had done.

The irretrievable losses are already counted in thousands per day, which means that the Russians are burning their reserves at an extremely rapid pace.

Yesterday, I told you that because the Russian offensive operation around Orikhiv had failed, the Russians started shifting their focus to other regions of the Zaporizhzhia front line.

I also told you that judging by the actions of the Russians, I expect the Russians to launch the offensive operation around Vuhledar within one day. And this is exactly how it happened.

The reason why Russian offensive actions here were largely predictable is that the Russians simultaneously moved their forces into the outskirts of the settlements that they control.

Usually, the outskirts are kept empty to leave some buffer zone, so eliminating these buffer zones simultaneously shows that the enemy is shortening the distance along all possible axes of advance.

And today, they moved precisely along these axes. The main direction of the attack became the eastern outskirts of Vuhledar. The reason why the Russians chose to put the most effort into this vector is twofold.

First of all, as you can see, Vuhledar consists of two parts: the city and a small countryside across the road.

Secondly, if we look at the topographic map, we can see that this countryside is located on the same hill as the city, which means that if the Russians establish their positions there, at least they will be storming high-rise buildings from the same elevation.

The Russians launched their artillery preparation with the main focus of pushing the Ukrainians from the outer edges of the countryside in order to create an opportunity for the attack group to establish a toehold.

The attack group quickly moved in and immediately engaged in positional fights. The second group made a supporting attack from Pavlivka.

Under normal circumstances storming Ukrainian trenches in front of Vuhledar would be a suicide operation, but the Russians moved in their thermobaric artillery and started burning the hospitals on the corner.

Under cover of smoke and devastating fire, the Russians managed to advance by up to 400 meters.

This is insignificant in this case, and they will likely be tied to that region, but as it is a supporting attack, their main goal is not to make a breakthrough but to draw attention and fix some forces, which they are doing. By the evening, the momentum was broken, and the fights became positional.

The Ukrainians have also reinforced this region with heavy equipment.

Even though the Russians cut off all highways leading to Vuhledar, there are still several dirt roads to the north, which are short and, given the below-zero temperature, can be used with no problems.

Ukrainian attack groups did not even need the roads, as they were advancing along the tree belts on Russian positions and firing at them from multiple tanks.

So far, there are only two visible results of this offensive operation: the Ukrainians lost the countryside, and the Russians lost a lot of troops.

In fact, since the Russians launched their offensives along the whole Zaporizhzhia front, their losses skyrocketed. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian losses over the last day amounted to almost 4 thousand soldiers: 910 killed and 2730 wounded.

And this does not include the massacre that took place today around Vuhledar. Although it does include the Russian sabotage group that got destroyed near Kherson.

The silence of the low activity in this region was broken recently by a company of Russian soldiers that tried to cross the Dnipro River near Potiomkin Island.

As mentioned previously, the Ukrainians established tight sniper control over this area because there were a lot of houses, and the Russians could quickly appear and try to carry out a certain mission.

When it comes to the areas that are located deeper in the Russian-controlled territories, the Russians are raiding museums.

According to a recent publication, more than 30 museums in the south, unfortunately, came to their attention, in particular those in Mariupol, Melitopol, but also Kherson before its liberation.

Ukrainian investigators are still cataloging the losses of missing oil paintings and other cultural objects, but the count is already in the thousands.

The southern museums had a lot of masterpieces of which there are no more in the world, the paintings for which art collectors are bidding millions of dollars.
