Zelensky seeing how emotional the West is, is pushing for maximal war aims including a Reconquista of Crimea.
I am reading a book "he First Total War: Napoleon's Europe and the Birth of Warfare as We Know It" by David Bell which explores how this maximal rhetoric first came into use due to the Enlightment and the French Revolution.
The 18th century aristocrats who ran Europe's armies and foreign policy would have laughed at the idea of Putin's balance of power land grab and pushing his favorite into power in the Ukraine, would call for a European wide crusade. That what was what all the wars they were involved with were all about. Diplomats would have been traveling all over Europe trying to iron out a settlement.
Although 18th century European society would have been horrified at Putin's targeting of non-combatants.
