On this date in 1936, the Seven Martyrs of Madrid became martyrs.*
These sisters of Catholicism’s Visitandine or Visitation Order were the last remaining to watch over their convent, which had been mostly evacuated for fear of anti-clerical violence in the unfolding Spanish Civil War.
Indeed, even these seven felt it wiser to stay in a nearby apartment where they secreted the convent’s treasures and kept their holy orders as quiet as possible.
Their precautions were justified — but insufficient. On the night of November 17, weeks after the Spanish capital was besieged by the Francoists an anarchist militia tossed the place, interrogated them, and then returned the next day to have them summarily executed on the outskirts of town....

The Soviet Union got somewhat in control of the Republic late in the war, mainly because it was the only country other than Mexico that would sell arms to the Republic. Then the Communists executed Anarchists and Socialists on their own side.
There were 13 bishops and about 4,000 priest executed or killed. There is controversy with all the saints etc. made that there were many executed by Franco’s side.

left? The US barred them from joining the US Armed Forces during WWII because they were not trusted. The Left has always had a significant foothold in our country as represented now by the RAT Party. By the way, Ernest Hemingway fought on the wrong side in Spain. That could be a reason that he killed himself at a later age when the bell tolled for him. Best American author, undisciplined mind. Catholic (like Biden and Pelosi) but chose to fight against Catholics in Spain.
Hemingway did not fight in the Spanish Civil War. He covered it as a reporter from the Republican side, which he was sympathetic to. He was wounded as an ambulance driver in WWI.
The Abraham Lincoln Brigade of US volunteers in the Spanish Civil War was organized by the US Communist Party.
Hemingway converted to Catholicism when he married a Catholic.
If Franco was a thug, his thuggery was mostly directed at those who needed it. Sometimes it takes a Franco to deal with the Left.
It may be that we've reached the point where only a Franco (or a Pinochet) can deal with Antifa, BLM, et al.
When I joined the military back in 1966 we were shown a list to see if we were in any of the organizations listed. Among them were KKK and Abraham Lincoln Brigade.
I had no idea what the Abraham Lincoln Brigade was and thought it must be a group of old ladies who get together for tea and politics.
I found out different later. I was not a member of any of those groups listed.

Had the Reds won in Spain, hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of Christians would have been murdered in a Stalinist style genocide. Franco prevented that. That weighs heavy in his favor when assessing the balance of his record.

I’ve read a number of books about the Spanish Civil War and still don’t understand it. It was a savage killing frenzy. I believe that it was where George Orwell started questioning blind adherence to the Communist line.

He was not an ally of Hitler, he kept Spain neutral during WW2. Do you know anything about Spanish politics ?
I’m not rooting for the mass-murdering leftist lunatics. They hate Franco and Gen. Pinochet in Chile, too. Franco kept Spain safe, neutral and prosperous for 4 decades. How many others can claim such a positive record while Europe fell into ruins between the different leftist factions ?
