That's one reason why the whole claim about "NATO aggression" was ridiculous from the start. The idea that NATO would invade Russia itself and risk nuclear retaliation is preposterous.

The only way to frame policy regarding this conflict is solely from American national interests.

The whole “NATO aggression” was just his deviant rationale for the invasion of Ukraine.
As far as nuclear weapon use, I agree with you. His own general was quoted as saying a week or so back, “What, does he think we are crazy?!” I do believe he would approve Russian attack on Ukraine’s nuclear power facilities.
As far s nuclear weapons, Putin was bluffing or perhaps he realized he didn’t have support from the Kremlin:
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday denied having any intentions of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine but described the conflict there as part of alleged efforts by the West to secure its global domination, which he insisted are doomed to fail.
Speaking at a conference of international foreign policy experts, Putin said it’s pointless for Russia to strike Ukraine with nuclear weapons.
“We see no need for that,” Putin said. “There is no point in that, neither political, nor military.”
You don’t need to attack the nuclear power plant itself just the transformers and the powerlines leading away from it.

I share your opinion on this, as well.
Actually, the more I think about, Russia would probably use nukes against China if invaded.
If they’re already depleting manpower & equipment in Ukraine, they might not have any other options.

No electricity is not just loss of heat, but loss of society, gasoline, diesel, food, internet, lights, cell phones, hospitals, banking, trade, transportation, water, commerce…..collapse.
The Ukies are now ( as of today) down to a 60 percent functioning power grid. Did not anyone listen to Vlad three weeks ago when he stated Russia “ hasn’t even started”?….guess what, he hasn’t, much, much more to come.

I agree. There’s no way Ukraine can win or recover their 4 lost areas. I have a feeling Putin’s just going to let them starve and if they continue to resist, he’ll invade Kiev directly from Belarus once the frost settles in (which is weeks away).
