A variation of a joke been going around, what did New England liberals use for heating before wood, oil and natural gas.

Let's look at this from the big picture for a few moments.

I have worked in some major oil refineries. The differences between home heating oil and diesel fuel are quite small. Diesel fuel has certain additives and state mandated formulations for less of certain combustion products.

Traditionally, a refinery in the early spring will shift its production mix to more gasoline and less diesel/fuel oil to build stocks for the summer driving season. Then toward the end of the summer it will switch back to build fuel oil stocks.

Right now the nation has less than a 30-day supply of diesel fuel. The US economy needs lots of diesel fuel for trucks and railroads to deliver products for the Christmas season. Diesel fuel and diesel exhaust fluid are both in short supply at the moment. Unfortunately, the transportation industry is able to pay more than the home heating sector of the economy.

Now let's look longer term. Many west coast states have said no new internal combustion vehicles will be allowed to be sold after 2030. So let's say you are the owner of a refinery. In less than 8 years, you refinery transportation market will be based on a dying set of vehicles, with little chance of expansion.

Would you invest in expansion of your refineries every in the future? No you wouldn't. So we currently have a shortage of fuels and that shortage is likely to get worse.

My advice? Make friends with your local fast food restaurant and learn how to filter and remove water and solids from used deep fat frying cooking oil. It can make a good source of either diesel transportation fuel or home heating oil.

And wood stoves and we have a great supply of wood.

We also got our oil tank filled up last week, so we’re set.

As a refuge from Ct, I predicted this energy shortage in the 90s. I hope that the eco zealots who brought the NE to this point will be held accountable.

From my understanding from another thread today heating oil and diesel fuel are almost alike except for a dye. If heating fuel and diesel fuel are competition against each other we are in for a world of hurt this winter.

That's my understanding too !
Now lets speak about kerosene, and it's price also which is up over $6.00 ( another heating fuel).
It is a man-made crisis

I was under the impression that heating oil is more like Kerosene. No?

A ton of coal is equal, to roughly 2 - 3 cords of firewood. A ton of coal is currently going for $270 per ton. Seems like the best deal going, unless you have your own woodlot.
