Russia shut down Nordstream I in July for “repairs,” and it never re-opened. In fact, at the beginning of September Russia shut it down indefinitely. Nordstream II was never open for business because Germany never certified it, and in April Germany announced it never would certify it. Russia shut down the pipeline. Question: Where is all the natural gas coming from that is bubbling up on the surface if both pipelines were shut down at the source?

There was gas already in the line. Russia closed the valve that fed the pipeline.
It’s like the municipal waterline to your house. The water company shuts off your water, but there is still water in the pipe between the shut-off valve and your faucet.

I believe that I read somewhere that there was about 1500 psi of pressure in the pipe.
