Russia's draft dodgers are a security threat to Europe
National Post [Canada] ^ | Sept. 30, 2022 | Adam Zivo

Russia tends to justify its expansionist wars by claiming that it is merely protecting Russian-speaking minorities in foreign countries. Of the six million people residing in the Baltics, approximately one million (17 per cent) are ethnically Russian. Ballooning the Baltics’ Russian population would allow Putin to more easily justify a future invasion on phony-humanitarian grounds....

Pro-war sentiment has also been observed in the Russian diaspora, particularly in Germany, where Ukrainians living there have been harassed by ethnic Russians so often that many no longer feel safe in the country....

They believe that a significant portion of Russian draft dodgers are not genuine dissidents, but rather are war supporters shirking the consequences of their politics.

This assessment seems plausible given consistent reports of Russians attempting to cross into neighbouring countries while donning pro-war “Z” and “V” stickers on their cars.

Genuinely anti-war Russians should be given refuge in countries where their presence doesn’t constitute a security risk. However, foreign nations have no obligation to shelter pro-war Russians, especially if doing so allows them to further support the war...

As of now, only cursory attempts have been made to distinguish between pro- and anti-war Russian emigres. Georgia border agents are turning back cars adorned with Putinist symbols, for example. Countries should do more vetting, such as asking draft dodgers to provide text messages or emails which establish a pattern of anti-war opposition...

But mass mobilization appears to have shaken Russia’s urban elites from their stupor. The realities of war have belatedly hit their homes and now they are angry and protesting in the streets. This anger must be allowed to froment. There is no reason for foreign countries to soften it by enabling an exodus of angry urban middle-class Russians who were, until very recently, fine with, or indifferent to, war....

"Forewarned is forearmed"

we've seen the excuses Putin and his sycophants use to justify nakedly invading neighboring countries

How many of these "anti-war" Russians are agents. They can settle in a new country, then ten years down the road, they can claim oppression, and beg "Mother Russia" to come in and save them.

Most are not anti-war. They just don’t want to participate.

All 15,000 of them. Although I am supporting sending them back. So much for the Western support of draft-dodging and promises of the asylum.

Exactly, as long as they were using soldiers from Dagestan, they were fine with it. Now that they’re coming from the folks in St. Petersburg and Moscow, not so much.

I’m thinking more of countries like Georgia, which has been flooded with Russians fleeing.

there’s a Russian meme going around with a Dad and two young children:

Girl: Daddy, what did you do in WWIII?
Dad: I zipped over to Georgia on my electric scooter.
Boy: I want to be just like Dad when I grow up!

The days of “Russia goes to War, folks in St. Petersburg and Moscow go to the mall” are over.

Russian draft dodgers should be encouraged to relocate to countries far away from Russia. Where Russia is unlikely to press a claim based on the number of Russian speaking people or the state being part of the former Soviet Union or Imperialist Russia.

They may still be a security risk from a standpoint of spies being among the refugees. But just keep them out of sensitive jobs.

Both Russians and Turks have long time outpriced the Georgans off of their own real estate market. This current wave is overblown by propaganda. This mobilization is particularly minor and nobody cares.

“ Ballooning the Baltics’ Russian population would allow Putin to more easily justify a future invasion on phony-humanitarian grounds....”

I believe it was NATO that invaded the Baltics on phony humanitarian grounds.

The Baltics asked for NATO.

I suppose American Draft Dodgers during Vietnam were security threats to Canada and anywhere else they went to.

Just as the tens of thousands of US/American draft dodgers, dissenters, etc that fled to Canada during the Vietnam War were.......

Nothing more than continued Russophobia.

Sure, Kosovo just begged NATO and the US to carpet bomb them.

Do you mean kind of like the turd world rapeugees who flock here after screwing up their own country? And the Democrat voters who flock to conservative areas after $#*++ing in their own nests?

That’s Balkans, not Baltics. Baltics are Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Russia's draft dodgers are a security threat to Europe

Just like American Draft Dodgers Dopers were a SUCCESSFUL security threat to Canada as Nazi Boy Trudeau attests.

America wasn’t using “Americans abroad are under threat” as an excuse to invade - Russia is

America wasn’t at war, or potentially at war, with Canada

don’t forget that Russia IS potentially at war with the Baltic States ... that’s why the situations are different
