Why on earth would any one think that Putin’s fall would result in an improvement in Russian leadership?

The result of Putin's removal would probably be a worse dictatorship. But from our perspective, a more competent but also a more cautious dictatorship would still be an entity we could negotiate with, unlike a delusional Putin.
