A long time ago, I learned that a vaccine for a viral illness uses the “dead or attenuated” virus. I mention that this is from a long time ago to indicate what I hope to be some independence from current news cycles. Attenuated is a fancy term for weakened. So, a vaccine uses dead or weakened virus. Weakened means alive. The idea that a live but weakened virus could cause illness does not seem absurd.
The familiar argument is that the body’s immune system reacts to the dead and weakened form of the virus and is then much better prepared for the real deal. Vaccines have had many successes. Still, it seems like you have to walk a fine line when you inoculate with a living virus.
