Europe’s Energy Disaster
American Conservative ^ | 9/14/2022 | David C. Hendrickson

The European energy disaster gets worse by the day. Energy bills ten times higher than the year before threaten the closure of major industries and small businesses in Britain, Germany, and the rest of the E.U. The base case now seems to be that Europe will be almost entirely deprived of Russian gas during the forthcoming winter.

Over the last several months, a series of retaliations—some European states refusing to pay for gas in rubles, various closures by Poland and Ukraine of the pipeline network—have been paired with Russian reductions (from 40 percent to 20 percent to 0 percent) of the Nord Stream I pipeline. In the summer, the drama entailed a dispute over gas turbines for the pipeline, stuck in Canada because of the sanctions, then sent to Siemens Germany, then rejected by the Russians because E.U. sanctions made the transaction illegal.

They have windmills and solar panels. What’s the problem?

The fact that you can’t power modern civilization with wind and solar?

Yes, I know it was a snarky, sarcastic rhetorical question.

Careful!! America had better not think of Schadenfreude while they have a fool in the white House who has the power and will to destroy his country. When he is finished with America, our adversaries will dance with REAL Schadenfreude that is irreversible. They may be the ones laughing last.

If Hillary the Witch had won, the United States would be in the same spot as Europe. Hillary and Kerry and the other greenie nutcases would have cut into our ability to ‘keep the lights on’...

I have little sympathy for most of Europe - they elected left wing ‘elites’ and they should realize ‘elections have consequences... AND realize it on their dime.

As Trump said, we wanted Europe to end faith in Russia and not depend on them for crucial goods, now Europe is being forced to take that advice.

This is a win for us, good news.

“””Energy bills ten times higher than the year before”””

I would like to see actual electrical bills from homeowners in Europe to see if, in fact, their bill is ten times higher than last year.

I suspect the 10 times higher mantra is the spot price for electricity bought on the wholesale market.

Today the spot price for California peak electricity is 120.

One year ago the spot price for California peak electricity is 40.

I doubt the homeowners in California are receiving electrical bills that are 3 times higher than Sept 2021.

They shut down all of the coal plants and now natural gas is the primary source of power.
