Some Mexican citizens in Mexico City are complaining about the recent flood of Americans into their areas. They are upset about Americans refusing to speak Spanish and also the gentrification they bring with them.
Many of these Americans are from California where the cost of living is many times higher than anywhere in Mexico, including Mexico City which is not necessarily cheap. Mexican citizens spend an average of 60% of their income on housing in the city. Americans, especially those from California, have enough income to live however they want in Mexico. This includes the ability to have certain shops closed down in favor of establishments that cater to them such as Pilates gyms.
The complaints some Mexican citizens have about Americans in Mexico are similar to the complaints Americans have about Mexicans in America. However, when these things are said from an American to a Mexican, it is considered racist.
“Mexican” is often viewed as a racial category instead of a nationality, which it is. The reality is that “racism” is not the problem here. Real people have real concerns about the place they live changing. This is a natural phenomenon and those who are speaking out should be heard. As a matter of fact, everyone should be heard, and not just people who come from so-called “brown” countries.
Good. Let the Mexicans have a taste of their own medicine.
Suck it up, Buttercups.
There goes the barrio.
Watching Americans come down there and buy things and respect laws? What an NPR puff piece about racists waiting to happen...!
What’s wrong with immigrants?
D*mn gringos. Messing up everything. Don’t speak the language, don’t pay the taxes, bring their left wing corrupting ideas.
Heh!
Mexico City is a schithole, why would anyone move there?
Compared to LA or SF, Portland or Seattle, probably looks pretty good.
Face it, the same kind of Americans who annoy us annoy people everywhere they go.
Except that the Mexican drug lords would have the locals' approval to rid their towns of these troublesome American immigrants and their pilates studios.
So, it's not quite the same. We have to suck it up. They won't. Too many Americans move in and not-so-subtle messages will be delivered.
I think the phenomenon is not simply white Americans working in Mexico City. It is a plague that the US also has the same problems or phenomenon. It’s called California’s who ruin everything where they move to. The irony is so rich and might be take me off my pills. Still laughing
The journey is from a bad shithole to a lesser shithole. First law of shithole thermodynamics.
Attention all Californians looking to leave the state of street bums and high taxes. In Mexico City you can live like kings and queens for a few pesos. Don’t move to a red state move to that “breakfast taco” city.

Nothing to laugh at. You can expect to hear the same complaint coming from European countries, soon. There is an active American migration stream going in the opposite direction away from America. Lots of people going to Portugal. It is like the migration that took place right after the Civil War in 1865 to countries like Brazil and Uruguay of rebels who did not want to live under the Yankees. Their ancestors are still proudly noticeable in those So. American countries.
I wonder how many of those Americans are draining the country’s social benefit system.
I wonder if a woman has a kid in a Mexican hospital, will that child instantly become a Mexican citizen.
Are any of those Americans taking jobs Mexicans won’t do?
Those Americans are pumping a ton of money into the local community. Curious to see the results of the future study comparing how the Americans are impacting that community as opposed to how Mexicans impact American communities.
How are the Mexican authorities dealing with the American Cartels that are smuggling Americans and drugs into the country?
An American politician could have a field day with this if one were bold enough to call Mexico out on this issue.
We’re not sending them our best.
😂👍
