Taiwan Might Be Forced to Fight China with Submarines from World War II

Analysis: Taiwan is Relying on World War II Era Submarines – It is hard to put an expiration date on military hardware, and some platforms remain in service decades after first entering service. The United States Air Force continues to operate around 48 B-52 Stratofortress bombers that date back to the 1950s and early 1960s, while the United States Navy returned its four Iowa-class battleships to service in the 1980s, only to retire them nearly a decade later.

In late 2020, the United States Navy also marked the 50th anniversary of the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19), one of two amphibious command ships in the U.S. Navy, and the oldest warship in operational service with the U.S. military. Then there is the USS Constitution, the three-masted wooden-hulled heavy frigate that is the oldest warship in the world. While still technically in “active service,” the frigate is preserved as a museum ship.

Taiwan is Relying on World War II Era Submarines

Silly questions: Are the torpedoes from WWII also ? Or can they use newer ones ??

Sorry Taiwan. Nothing for you and your troubles with China.

We got involved in a senseless and unnecessary war against Russia. Ukraine’s taken all our money and ammunition.

Won’t they get stuck in the mud too easily? And be terrible at climbing mountains with?

Well, China is not exactly a sophisticated naval power, so even WW2 subs are probably still good enough for defensive purposes. The Chinese plan for invasion involves drafting thousands of civilian vessels like fishing or cargo boats and using those to transport the invasion force. I guess like a “human wave” but on ships.

So those would be quite easy to sink with any submarine, but of course, if there are a thousand of them, the Taiwanese will not sink them all, and the Chinese are perfectly willing to sacrifice a lot of them as long as they get a beachhead out of it.

What about drones as well? Doesn’t what is happening in the Black Sea suggest that anything above water is an easy target?

In addition to a sizeable force of anti-ship missiles, Taiwan has acquired several older submarines that could help stop an invasion force.

For defending an island against a seaboard invasion force, anti-ship missiles are better.

The US was not going to fight China over Taiwan at any time after 1973.

If the US fears to sell Taiwan Subs now, Taiwan should not expect our help later. With Biden as POTUS, they should not even think about it.

Not necessarily true. What you could do is have a lot of cheap drones that don’t do much but attract fire swarm the invasion fleet and have the invasion fleet expend missiles and ammunition against the cheap drones - a form of drone chaff. You also send in more capable drones and hit smaller ships with bombs to damage and disable them. For the larger ships you can send the subs.

Give them a couple of Ohio Class subs, fully loaded. We’ll keep advisors on board to work with the Taiwan Navy.

Modernized diesel electric subs can be very very quiet. Used in a defensive mode they are a serious threat.

I bet there isnt 1 WW2 operational sub in military service. It would be almost 80 years old.

Well, I suppose if you have 1000 armed drones to throw at them it might make a difference. But I suspect the Taiwainese do not.

The article states that Pakistan lost one of their “Tench-class” boats while laying mines in the Bay of Bengal during their 1971 war with India. So the boats do have the ability to sow a small minefield — which is a pretty good use for a diesel electric sub. Just sneak into the PRC’s coastal area and lay a few mines outside of an invasion harbor. BOOM! Operations shut down until the area can be swept (if it can be swept).
