Ukraine: military situation update with maps, July 14, 2022

(Numbered printed material below - Some of the items below may be out of date, and not updated yet)

••denotes transcribed dialogue.

———————————————————————————————————————
••Russian Economic Update:
Putin signed law to start a soft war mobilization of economy - private companies will not be able to deny a non-negotiable contract from the Russian military and will have to comply. Changes work terms for employees - will have to be available at all times to fulfill military contract.

Law is ‘soft’ because it stops short of forcing private companies to produce military goods.

••Russian Political Update:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued ••2nd warning•• that the West is teetering on the edge of direct military confrontation.

••Lithuania Update:
Passage of Russian goods to Kaliningrad region. EU agreed to allow passage with some restrictions. Russia sees problem as resolved. Lithuania will likely have to comply with agreement.

•• WiU Commenter:
Germany, USA, and the EU Commission basically betrayed Lithuania just like the major powers before WW2 sold Checkloslovakia in the Munchen treason. The EU document solely is meant for Lithuania, and only Lithuania’s railroads are used.

Lithuania put its position clearly to the EU commission, however it was disregarded, and Lithuania was treated not as a sovereign country but as a corridor. What this also did was discredit Lithuania’s current president and the entire ruling party.

It is highly likely that in the next elections the Opposition party, which is more PRO Russian will win. Also Dalia Grybouskaitė put a very hard position on what just happened. She basically told the current political leadership that they are chickens and should have stood firm on the strategic issue.

It is highly likely that Dalia Grybauskaite will participate and win in the next presidential elections. She is a very tough hardliner against Russia, however in this case also against the EU.

It remains to be seen, but right now there is a massive sentiment of betrayal in Lithuania. There are opinions that the whole stand-off might have been artificially created so that USA and Germans could ask Russia for something in exchange. No one will probably tell loud what it might have been however it was done at the cost of Lithuania’s sovereignty.

If it was used as a bargaining chip to get the Nordstream 1 running again after its maintenance - that would be very sad. Also there seems to have been some progress in the Ukraine grain export negotiations at the exact same time. The West still have not learned. Whatever the Russian promised - they will not follow through.

Also a week or two ago NATO said that there were no forces to put in Lithuania despite promising a battalion. And all of a sudden, magically, the Germans agreed to place the battalion in Lithuania while the transit dispute was going on. It is highly likely that Lithuania was blackmailed with that to concede. Either comply - or get no battalion.

This is a betrayal, no mater how you look at it. When Dalia Grybauskaite will be the President again, it is highly likely that a Veto power will be executed in votes in the EU which discredit Lithuania’s strategic interests int he future. This might strengthen the Anti-EU sentiment.

Not only that, the Commission allowed to transport to Kaliningrad as much goods as before, which means even the goods that had been meant for export out of Kaliningrad ports. The history repeats itself, so it seems.

Ukraine Situation Report: Ukrainian Troops Training With Howitzers Optimized For Guided Artillery Rounds
Having the M777A2 howitzer means Ukraine can more easily and effectively employ Excalibur guided-artillery shells in the heat of combat.
Excerpt:
Ukrainian troops are now training on M777A2 towed Howitzer that is optimized for firing GPS-guided artillery shells. These are the same shells that were promised as part of Washington’s most recent $400 million military aid package.

In the most-recent security assistance package, the U.S. Defense Department has only said it will be sending 1,000 rounds of 155 mm howitzer rounds that provide “greater precision” than standard shells for the M777. The New York Times on July 13 reported that the precision 155mm rounds were indeed Excalibur guided artillery shells.

Ukrainians have harnessed the weapon’s power to hone in on specific high-value targets and are using them so effectively that the U.S. is sending another four launchers. That will bring the number of HIMARS in Ukraine to 12, on top of tracked M270 multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) donated by other NATO nations.

The Ukrainians may have gotten some targeting help from the Russians themselves, according to a video that popped up on Twitter recently. It appears that one Russian soldier or collaborator filmed several others loading a truck with ammunition inside one of their massive ammo dumps in the Donetsk region. When the video was posted to social media, the Ukrainian Army was able to identify the location and target it with artillery.

It would seem that Ukraine has run out of tank killing ATGMs and has not been resupplied by NATO. Russia has yet to make any significant attacks on the Ukraine supply line, but if NATO is slow to resupply, they may not need to.

It is now a war of logistics. Whoever is the first to run out of weapons, ammo or men will loose.

I suspect that you'd be less philosophical and sanguine on the topic of "mortality" if your own life were on the line.

It's cheap to adopt the supposedly moral high ground of "Well, everyone dies some day. Let's just fold our arms and do nothing while the brutal aggressor tramples on International Law and *ss-rapes the innocent victim" while you sit in your comfortable BarkaLounger and sip martinis.

Russian tanks fielded in Ukraine have become rare. The Ukrainians have already destroyed so many Russian tanks that it's becoming harder and harder to find undamaged Russian tanks to destroy.

That is the way it appears to me.

The Russians have stopped using tanks, because they are running out of tanks, and tanks have not been shown to be very effective.

The Russians still have lots of artillery, and are using it. Both sides can see paths to victory.

This is how wars become long wars.

“Ukraine has run out of tank killing ATGMs”

I don’t think that’s the case. UA has said they need long range systems more than ATGMs.

I haven’t heard any NATO nation providing ATGMs to UA recently because they have enough of those.

But your conclusion seems spot on: “It is now a war of logistics.”

“The Ukrainians may have gotten some targeting help from the Russians themselves, according to a video that popped up on Twitter recently.”

This is the video being referred to. Supposedly, UA determined the ammo depot location from the video.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PT-91_Twardy

The manufacturer only built ~285 so 232 is most of the ones in existence. 135 modernized T-72M1 tanks (made in late 80s) delivered 1998–2002
