Charles Butt has repeatedly worked against parental rights activists.
Charles Butt, the billionaire heir and CEO of the Texas grocery empire H-E-B, sponsored a recent “family friendly” drag show and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on anti-school choice campaigns.
In June, H-E-B sponsored an LGBT “pride” event in downtown Austin. The event, called Rainbow on the Creek, included a drag queen story hour, a “family-friendly all ages” drag show performed by a group called the Hydrated Queer Kitties, and a pride parade. A Libs of TikTok tweet showed the scantily clad performers dancing sensually in front of parents and their children.
The event’s website says, “The celebration will include 25+ [activities] by LGBTQIA+ nonprofits and partners, a Queer BIPOC and Latinx artisan & craft market, gender-affirming care & sexual health resources, and many more activities for the whole family.”
But this is not the only controversial cause Butt has supported.
One of Mr. Butt’s influential anti-school choice operations comes in the form of The Charles Butt Public Education Political Action Committee, which has made donations to 22 political campaigns that oppose school choice. The PAC has received $750,000 in contributions from Butt.
Of the 22 campaign donation recipients, 16 are Republican candidates, including Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan, State Rep. Glenn Rogers, and Comptroller Glenn Hegar (who received a combined total $120,000). Of the 16 Republican candidates, Phelan and six others have been endorsed by the Texas State Teachers Association (part of the National Education Association, the largest teachers union). The TSTA also currently endorses Democrat gubernatorial candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke.
Butt has also heavily funded the Raise Your Hand Texas organization, which opposes school choice and advocates for spending more tax money on the current public system, as well as The Charles Butt Foundation, which also opposes school choice.
However, Butt’s campaigns have placed him at odds with a growing number of parents across the state. A 2022 Morning Consult poll revealed that 76 percent of Texas parents would support directly funding students instead of the current government system.
Additionally, a record number of Texas families are now choosing to homeschool their children. The Texas Home School Coalition reports a near tripling of homeschooled students between April and October 2020 (from 4.5-12.3 percent of all Texas students) making for a total of 750,000 homeschoolers in Texas alongside 250,000 students in Texas private schools.
The popularity of school choice among families and grassroots activists grew significantly during the COVID lockdowns, when parents across the nation were able to look more closely at the dysfunctional government monopoly system and what schools were teaching their children. As Texas Scorecard has frequently chronicled, many decried the troubling and sexually explicit curricula and racist ideologies taught in their children’s classrooms.
With the Republican Party of Texas selecting school choice as a legislative priority for the upcoming 2023 state legislative session, parents and citizens are eager to see how the Republican-controlled Texas Legislature will respond.
Unfortunately H-E-B is a premier, well managed grocery chain in Texas that dominates almost every city or town where it has a store or stores. Although many Texans would like to boycott the store, it is difficult due to its dominance.

This is awful.Of the 16 Republican candidates, Phelan and six others have been endorsed by the Texas State Teachers Association (part of the National Education Association, the largest teachers union).
Any doubt we are under “corporate socialism” now?
So true!
No such things as clown shows anymore?
Or are they just limited to congress?
I like a lot of things on the Disney channel, but refuse to pay them another dime ever.
Am struggling to get off my cable, because I hate supporting most of the channels you have to. Soon I’ll get it cut. Mostly it’s the wife that refuses to learn how to work the apps on the internet.
If I had a grocery store chain in my area that did what this chain in Texas is doing, I’d have to starve to death before giving them any money. I have enough to account to God for that I’ve done, and I don’t need the kiddy diddy thing on my back, no sir.
I would find something.

Personal life
Butt is single. Butt and his family were excluded from the annual Forbes list of the world’s top billionaires beginning in 2016. The magazine changed its methodology to exclude individuals from families that share their fortunes.
Billionaire, 84, lifelong “bachelor”.
There is clearly a Corporate-Marxist alliance. Corporations wanted Biden and Trump gone.
Good thing is we have a Porters about 10 miles away.
I have bothered to read only the first sentence of the article about the supermarket tycoon. That was enough. The man’s name is Mr. Butt. What’s in a name? Something is, it seems.
The Butts used to be big Baptists, with no beer and wine sold in their stores, iirc. Things have certainly changed. HEB is one of the largest privately owned companies in the country, btw.
Apparently this guy was in the know about the Big Steal prior to the 2020 election:
Sept 3, 2020
“SAN ANTONIO – In a rare move for Charles Butt, the San Antonio-based grocery chain owner wrote to the Texas Supreme Court in support of Harris County’s plan to send vote-by-mail applications to all its voters.
Harris County is in the middle of legal challenges over its plan to send applications for mail-in ballots to registered voters 65 and older” …
And Beto-boy is within 5 points? What up Texas?
Charlie must be kinky.
The moral decay of so many people is shocking.
It won’t be the first difficult thing I’ve done and I doubt it’ll be the last.
Bye, HEB.
There is a word for the merger of corporate and state power. It’s called fascism.
We thought we got rid of them in 1945.
They came back to life in Ukraine.
They came back to life in Davos.
They came back to life in Australia.
They came back to life in Canada.
They came back to life in the USA.
The Hebes can be really strange.
Welp, I guess Fiesta and Aldi just got more business.
