A leftist economist connected to liberal billionaire George Soros claimed that the Wuhan COVID-19 virus actually originated in a U.S. lab, feeding Communist Chinese anti-American propaganda.

Columbia University Center for Sustainable Development Director Jeffrey Sachs decried the U.S. government’s “very harsh line against China” during a talk at the Madrid-based GATE Center June 15. “I’m pretty convinced [COVID-19] came out of U.S. lab biotechnology, not out of nature — Just to mention after two years of intensive work on this. So it’s a blunder in my view of [U.S.] biotech, not an accident of a natural spillover,” Sachs said.

Sachs’s comments squarely align with Chinese propaganda on COVID-19’s origins. The argument that COVID-19 originated in the U.S. is not just “provocative”; it’s the same argument that China has hammered for months. China Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying even posted Sachs’s GATE center comments on Twitter. Hua tweeted in a thread: “Given the heavy human and economic toll taken by the virus, don't we owe it to the millions of lives lost to have a thorough investigation into US labs?”

All true. SARS-COV-2 may have been initially released from the Wuhan lab, but the U.S. was responsible for its design -- i.e., for the gain of function research that made the pathogen what it was. That research was done in the U.S., by Americans, not by the ChiComs.

People may not want to believe this, but it is true nevertheless.

I don’t disagree with the origin. I disagree with the leak. The virus was leaked from a Chinese lab. The spike protein came from an American lab. It was very likely combined with the corona virus in China. But we taught them to do it. And that is actually known from Fauci emails.

Agreed, but University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill North Carolina would be a good place to start. Cahpel Hill was studying gain of function with several of the people from Wuhan a few years prior to the China outbreak of COVID 19.

Sachs was an academic advisor to the the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences during the drafting of Laudato si' and helped promote it, but no, he did not write it, and lacked the theological expertise and governing authority to write it. Cardinal Peter Turkson led the team that drafted it, and Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández edited it. Various advisory bodies and contributors were consulted. Sachs participated in the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences as a non-Catholic academic advisor, not an ecclesiastical decision-maker or author. Pontifical academies are academic honorary societies that invite members based on academic achievement regardless of theological background, and they have an advisory input capacity rather than ecclesiastical governing authority. Another advisor to Laudato si' was German climatologist Hans Joachim Schellnhuber of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the successor of an academy presided over by Galileo which later included Stephen Hawking as a member. These types of advisors can offer input based on their fields of expertise, but have no authority to draft ecclesiastical documents. Similarly, on the theological side, another key advisor was Father Seán McDonagh, who influenced the thinking behind Laudato si' but did not write it. Turkson and Fernández were the key writers/editors. Turkson is theologically conservative on issues like abortion and LGBT leans more liberal on economics. Fernández is significantly more liberal (though he talks out of both sides of his mouth to maintain his position) and had the final editing say before the document was approved by Pope Francis.
