I would vote for a constitutional amendment that ALL new bills have to be read out loud, word-for-word, before that can be voted on.
And no person not present at the time of reading could vote.

Convention of States!!!! (which is NOT the same thing as a Federal Constitutional Convention) And there are far more Republican states

Retiring this year: Blunt, Burr, Toomey, Portman

Cassidy wants to run for guv next year. Romney could retire in 2024.

Finally, Collins + McConnell.

The new Senate has to ditch McConnell as Majority Leader.

He’s mired in the Swamp, and can’t extricate himself.

How about Rand Paul, a REAL conservative from Mitch’s home state ?

Unless we replace the majority of GOP Senators, we are stuck with Mitch.
80% of them are his bitches.

Cornyn should decide to retire because he won’t be elected next time. Might as well have the fake Mexican Beto as Cornyn the liar.

Flimsey Grahamnesty is proof that Cornyn can be re-elected no matter how many times he betrays his voters.

Grahamnesty has been re-elected TWICE after THREE amnesty votes.

Cornyn shouldn’t have run for re-election the last time. Texas can do better.

Long time between now and 2026.

Whether or not they run is up to their donors. Lots of money to be made by running.

Mike Lee is gaslighting. There is noting wrong with not showing someboey a bill before you aks if they will entertain the subject. Nobody has been asked to pass it, they’ve only been asked to consider it.

He’s had time to read it and make a remark on the substance. Has he made a remark on the substance? I understand if he has other priorities. Maybe he can promise to remark on the substance tomorrow.

Who’s side are ya’ll on? You’re the 3rd person here who is pleading for McConnell to keep running. I don’t get it.

Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

Read that aloud, or silently to yourself, and see if you can make any sense of it.

You can't. Not because you can't read, but because to make sense of it, you have to know what OTHER laws say.

There is another way that Congress can skin the cat you propose. Delegate all the details to agencies. Then read aloud "All authority to make rules on gun possession is hereby delegated to the ATF." Now you know the law, they all agree to it. Plus, hot potato shoveled off to ATF.

I doubt that. It is what it is. If it wanted to do better, it would have done so already.

Nice straw man you have there. It'd be a shame if something happened to it.

I think you missed the point.

No one would write another of these 700 page bills, if they were forced to read them.

And we could stop creating thousands of pieces of legislation, just so some congress-critter can proudly announce how many new things he got passed.

The federal register is hundreds of pages long to enforce the 10 commandments.

I'd actually set a Constitutional Amendment that:

1) A bill may be a maximum of XXXX words.

2) A bill may consist of existing law markups, but the changes to the existing law MUST be written as a seperate document, available to the public, that shows the results of that markup.

3) The time between the release of the bill to lawmakers, and any vote, must consist of one hour per 100 words.

This would prevent obfuscation of what bills intend, and would also prevent rushed votes.

None of this will ever happen, of course. The lawmakers love the secrecy and the rushed votes.

In the FWIW department, the Federal Register is where the regulatory agenices post theair garbage, not where Congress posts its garbage. The Congressional garbage is published in the Congressional Record. That too is hundreds of pages long, but not near as long as the Federal Register.

And maybe you missed my point. There is no writing yet devised that will contrain a government. Not a constitutional provision, not a constitution amendment, not a constitution. Those things are interpreted and twisted in ways necessary for those wielding the power to get their way.

All for your own good, of course.

I disagree. The Bush Dynasty has had a stranglehold on the Republican Party until recently. Ted Cruz is the only high-up Texas Republican that didn't kiss the ring of the Bushes to get where he is. For the most part, I like Abbott and Paxton but Cornyn is a rather constant disappointment.
