President Biden told union workers at the AFL-CIO convention in Philadelphia, that Republicans want to get rid of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid based on a proposal by National Republican Senatorial Conference Chairman Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), which calls for all federal legislation to sunset in five years.
“All federal legislation sunsets in 5 years. If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again,” Scott’s proposal states. […]
Biden attributed Scott’s proposal to the Republican Party despite Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-S.C.) saying months ago that such a proposal will not be part of the Republican agenda.
“Let me tell you what will not be a part of our agenda: We will not have as part of our agenda a bill that raises taxes on half the American people and sunsets Social Security and Medicare after five years. That will not be part of the Republican Senate majority agenda,” McConnell said at a GOP leadership meeting on April 28. […]
“Every five years, it would be put on the chopping block, every five years, and if it’s not reinstated by a vote in the Senate of 60 or more, guess what? It automatically goes out of existence. That’s what they’re proposing. Unless the Congress affirmatively votes to bring them back into existence. Think about that,” Biden said. …

A Dem stunt? I thought this was a Republican who made the proposal.
“The dems pull this stunt every election and the media serves it up on a silver platter”
They’re just quoting Republicans who are always talking about cutting Social Security or denouncing it as a “Ponzi scheme”. Just before the 2018 midterms, Mitch McConnell started talking about cutting Social Security. The Dems used that in ads. You can’t really blame them. They weren’t being dishonest. And now Scott is calling for “sun setting” Social Security, with some kind of vague promise to replace it. That’s going to make seniors feel real safe.
In fact , a number of Freepers have called Social Security a “Ponzi”. Then they complain when the Dems tell voters tgat the GOP won’t protect Social Security. Folks, you can’t denounce Social Security and then resent the Democrats for pointing that out
You are right. It was the can opener. And the Libs fell for it.
I think it was his mother, not his grandmother. His mother was in her early 80s at the time.
“Paul Ryan wanted to push grandma + her wheelchair over the cliff”
Ryan DID call for cutting Social Security. The Democrats weren’t lying when they pointed that out. At the same time, Ryan supported endless spending on our Middle East wars. We had enough money for endless war, but not for Social Security. Rush never pointed out Ryan’s double standard, but enough voters saw it so that Romney-Ryan went down in flames
“You know what, a lot of people believe this stuff. Scare tactics always work”
Scott says he wants to “sunset” Social Security with some vague strategy to replace it, maybe.
So how exactly is Biden lying when he points this out? Scott isn’t some back-bencher. He’s head of the GOP Senate campaign committee. And he’s an idiot.
Repeat, rinse, repeat.
What a bunch of demented assholes.
Heard this sh%t way back in the day.
“And the Libs fell for it”
No, voters heard it from Ryan’s own mouth. He was endlessly talking about cutting “entitlements”. (He still is). That means cutting Social Security. Rush was trying to cover for him, but voters knew what they heard. And they defeated Romney-Ryan in large part because of it.
Building more electric cars wont lower the price of them either.
Not as long as this asshole is in the white house.
Stupid worthless pig faced son of a bi^ch.
Good. Ponzi schemes.
“Repeat, rinse, repeat.”
Actually, it’s Republican establishment types who do the repeating. Every few years they start talking about cutting Social Security. This time it’s idiot Sen Scott, calling for “sun setting” the program, with no specific plan for a replacement. I know a number of people who need Social Security to get by, so loose talk about “sunsetting” the program, from the Senate GOP campaign chairman, might make them think twice about voting GOP
YES!
Of course, we certainly DO wish to get rid of those horrible non-constitutional programs.
“. Ponzi schemes.”
How is Social Security more Ponzi than any other government spending, including the Army and Marine personnel? Like Social Security, All government program require continued inflix of new tax money to keep going and pay current expenses
“YES!
Of course, we certainly DO wish to get rid of those horrible non-constitutional programs”
If “we” is the GOP, that’s a sure fire platform for losing the election.
I don’t remember that aspect of the can opener spoof.
Besides, Rush did not influence an election over a can opener joke. Not that many people heard Rush talk about it.
Ah, so Putin’s Price hike, white supremacists, transitory inflation, etc did not work, so dims dust off the old playbook of scaring seniors. Uh huh
On second thought, you are right. I stand corrected.
Don’t forget about Putin’s tax.
Ryno was doing what his Democratic fellow travelers told him to.
Anyone who votes Democratic on the basis of fearing their “entitlements” cut is a leftist anyhow. And there weren’t enough of them in 2020 besides.
Amen!
