No, voters heard it from Ryan’s own mouth. He was endlessly talking about cutting “entitlements”. (He still is). That means cutting Social Security. Rush was trying to cover for him, but voters knew what they heard. And they defeated Romney-Ryan in large part because of it.
I don’t remember that aspect of the can opener spoof.
Besides, Rush did not influence an election over a can opener joke. Not that many people heard Rush talk about it.
