Guess I'm different. From the very beginning. As the planes took off to my favorite Foghat music the ground(deck) crew, through their signals and mannerisms were acting like they were choreographed dancers, not crewmen.
Manly, machismo. I dig it man! Then there's the big man-hugs. Makes you think that in adversity all our societal problems are solved regarding feminism and race. All that Gung-ho stuff just had to make me laugh. Been there-done that.
Pretty sure Tom Cruise is still a Scientologist.

That’s the new formula; main white actor with mostly black supporting actors. I watched a movie recently where the main actor was that guy from Guardians of the Galaxie. Almost all of the secondary characters were black; the young genius, the comedy relief, and the unsung hero. It was pretty obvious.

Yes, it’s a made up movie. Most people don’t really expect reality unless it says something like “based on actual events” or “depicts actual events”.
For those wondering why this Top Gun: Maverick review is late, as I’ve previously explained, my wife and I are in quarantine pending surgery. This means we go nowhere, see no one, have groceries delivered… COVID could kill the whole deal. What changed? Well, the surgery will take place three hours from home, so we decided to camp nearby for a couple of weeks, and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a drive-in out here, and that drive-in’s playing Top Gun: Maverick, so here we are…
Let me start by saying this… Because so much time’s passed since TGM’s release, my expectations were sky-high. When was the last time so many people were unanimously in love with a movie?
Well, those expectations were not only met, they were exceeded. TGM is spectacular. The nostalgia factor is perfectly calibrated, the story immediately pulls you in and never breaks the spell, the peril felt real, and, above all, Tom Cruise’s performance as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is one for the ages.
Cruise isn’t getting enough credit for pulling this off. It’s been 36 years since the late Tony Scott’s Top Gun blew the doors off the box office. Thirty-six years. How many actors have you seen resurrect a role after a lengthy recess and still come across as the same guy?
I can’t think of one.
I didn’t find it entertaining. (especially after seeing the original Star Wars in a movie theater) I think the only movie I liked with Tom Cruise was the one with pre-crime, and that was because Max von Sydow (R.I.P) was in it!
I finally went out and watched the movie today. I loved it despite the obvious lean towards blacks and women. I cared about the characters, I thought Tome Cruise was great, I cared about his character and others, and the action was non-stop and trilling.
IMO, MUCH better than the first Top Gun which was only about training and I thought pretty boring. This was a story about live action in combat. Cool stuff.
BTW, the music, mostly rock, was spot on.
The Who’s “Won’t Be Fooled Again” was perfect for the first training session. Lots of fun.
I’ve noticed so many movies try to put a pop music/rock soundtrack in there and often is uninspired. Somebody had it right on this one.

Wow, you saw Maverick two times?? We’re going to see it tomorrow (Saturday) for the first time. Just re-watched the original Top Gun earlier tonight.
Awhile back there were reports he had left. Upon further review it appears he may be “in the process of leaving...” Sad. I thought he had left.
No kidding, Mulholland drive, great movie but I remember it for Jennifer Connelly. If I saw that movie in my 20’s, I would have followed her around until I was married or arrested. She is good looking now, but then??? forgetaboutit.
I can’t wait to see it in theater.
I spent a lot of my life hating on the greats at sports, John Elway, Tom Brady and others who would rip my team loving heart out time after time.
I felt the same about Tom Cruise for years, but loved his movies while not accepting the fact of his greatness as a movie star. I ending up feeling the same way about Tom Crues, as I do now think about Elway and Brady.
I wasted years wanting them to fail on the field, instead of enjoying what they did. To hate Tom Cruise movies is the same thing.
Tom Cruise is to movies what Montana, Elway, Marino, Kelly, Fouts, and Stabler were to quarterbacking in my younger days. All he does is perform, and win win win and win once more. I really cannot come up with a movie he has made that I do not like, although I haven’t seen Vanilla Sky.
He is better than Schwarzenneger at his top, the equal of Stallone in Rocky 1 - 3. Except the movies he has made consistently are excellent measured against all others.
Better than the stupid Avengers crap, or the artsy stuff.
Every movie is not the best every year, but they are in the top 10 of the year time after time.
His success is well earned and not hype. Sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy the ride. When he quits, everyone is going to miss him.

Pretty much agree with your comments above, Jim W N. Hubby and I saw Top Gun Maverick tonight in a very crowded theater in central Connecticut. 'Maverick' was playing at closely-staggered times in *multiple* theaters in this 18-theater Cinemark (ie 5:45, 6:15; 6:45, etc.), up against the newly-released Jurassic Park movie.
We thoroughly enjoyed the movie, as far-fetched as it was... and the plot was kind of 'meh'. The action sequences were almost too exciting, lol. The audience broke into applause at the end.
