“IMO, the “One China” policy should be amended to state that Taiwan is the only legitimate government of China.”
The strategic ambiguity policy was adopted because of the Chinese need for “face.” Not making US policy clear allows the Chinese leaders to save “face.” It’s a real and serious problem because if the Chinese lose “face” then they will be forced to attack simply to save “face.” It’s not a concept that’s part of our culture, but it is understood. Therefore, to avoid the necessity of fighting the Americans don’t “insult” the Chinese. It’s like living in a house with an abusive parent. The child learns how not to trigger the abuse. Although, following that example further, it’s no fun to be an abuser if you don’t abuse someone. So, eventually, they’ll self-trigger. But the idea is to put that moment off as long as possible hoping that China will simply implode. They’re working on doing that now. Probably, there’s no way to stave off an eventual war. Let’s hope we have a real leader when that happens.
Good comments.
