I remember Kadena when the B-52s were there and got thrown out because Okinawans were afraid of bombers laden with bombs for Viet Nam could crash there. The B-52s were moved to Taiwan’s CCK air base and all the KC-135 tanker operations scaled up at Kadena.
This is the thanks that Taiwan gets for supporting the US, and the Okinwans? It never hit them that a fully fuel-loaded KC-135 crashing causes a lot of havoc, too..

Okay, thanks for the info. I am always dubious about anything in the NYT but it looks like even Trump is ok with China annexing Taiwan someday.
I don’t think Trump really was OK with China annexing Taiwan, just being pragmatic about getting a trade deal, trying not to provoke China, and assuming nothing was going to happen anytime soon.
