It feels like the consent of the governed is slipping away in the U.S. The reason is so obvious we dare not acknowledge it or discuss it: those in power--elected and unelected--only give lip-service to "serving the public interest and common good." Beneath this flimsy facade of PR, every action serves the interests of a wealthy, politically potent elite or the self-interests of those in power.

You are right. I’m not sure. I hate to say it but probably Daddy Bush saying “we are ushering a new world order”. At the time, I didn’t give it much thought.

Many of us recognized this fact years ago. It is this realization that led to the TEA Party movement and the Convention of States movement.
Those two movements led to the Deep States’ surveillance of We The People in order to protect themselves from us.
Since it was Obvious that Donald Trump re[presented We The People against the Deep State they pulled out all the stops to Destroy him and thus dispirit us.
Their position is that "government by the people" is unworkable and inefficient because most humans are idiots.
That is a correct assessment, but overlooks the fact that the Deep State and Elites are also idiots.
This is why Americans must not relinquish their weapons. As long as the masses are armed, the plan of the Deep State and Elites can be prevented (and they know it).
If everyone went back to the ‘old country’ it wouldn’t be so bad. People would migrate anyway. Would they fight for what’s underground in their neighbors territory? Females-don’t they have their own? Kings could not be happy in their kingdom. They always had to raid the next one. I once saw the Edinburg Castle. Didn’t need to go in. How do you get people en masse to attack with bows and arrows?
Then there’s religion. The only ones dying to spread theirs is the moozlems. Mormons tried the same thing once. Now they all dress up like the Jehovas.
You gotta admit there’s no love lost for those that come over, spice up our food and de-flower our daughters. It’s evolution but then there’s the religion of government policy. Too many Mexicans. Blacks? What would you prefer-coming on a slave ship or stay home and be eaten?
Never trust anyone who presumes to tell you about seeking “the common good.”

The greatness of America in terms of business and invention is the result of the incentivization of individuals (that comes from individual freedom) to create/produce/market and to govern themselves.
