Gun Deaths & Misleading Words: Spectrum Article vs Letter to the NEJM
AmmoLand ^ | May 4, 2022 | Dean Weingarten

On April 23, 2022, Spectrumnews1.com published an article by Ryan Chatelain about a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM).

The letter was about the increase in firearm-related deaths among young people aged 0-19. There was a significant increase in 2020 over 2019. Few Americans would be surprised by this, as the increase in homicides, especially in urban centers among young minority adults, is well known.  In a peculiar twist, Chatelain attributes the cause of the deaths to firearms.

This was a significant change from the original letter to the NEJM.

From spectrumnews1.com:

Firearms have surpassed automobiles as the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in the United States, researchers at the University of Michigan say.

The letter to the NEJM contained the peculiar grouping of young adults 18-19 as “children and adolescents”. It was careful not to claim that firearms were the cause of the deaths.

From nejm.com, letter to the editor:

The previous analysis, which examined data through 2016, showed that firearm-related injuries were second only to motor vehicle crashes (both traffic-related and nontraffic-related) as the leading cause of death among children and adolescents, defined as persons 1 to 19 years of age.4 Since 2016, that gap has narrowed, and in 2020, firearm-related injuries became the leading cause of death in that age group (Figure 1).

(snip)

Although the new data are consistent with other evidence that firearm violence has increased during the Covid-19 pandemic,5 the reasons for the increase are unclear, and it cannot be assumed that firearm-related mortality will later revert to prepandemic levels. Regardless, the increasing firearm-related mortality reflects a longer-term trend and shows that we continue to fail to protect our youth from a preventable cause of death.

There are two important differences

Homicides and suicides are not caused by guns.

When committed with guns, they are firearms related deaths.

If we lose our Second Amendment rights (and I believe we will) it will be because of “young minority adults.”

And, no doubt more usage of the messaging guide for “firearms violence”:

Not sure if it’s been updated lately.

3% of the population, 50+% of the gun crimes.

Whoever could it be?

A way to lie with statistics.

By lumping all gun-related deaths together, they imply guns are the cause.

But suicides and homicides have very different causes.

I would like to see the data broken out by 0-3, 4-7, 8-11, 11-15 and 15-19.

Each group is fairly unique - and lumping together under three y.o. with 18 y.o. gangbangers is certainly disingenuous.

No guns in Japan but a much higher suicide rate.

For Gun Control Supporters, Japan's High Suicide Rate Is Much Less Interesting Than Its Low Homicide Rate

In the article, legal adults 18 and 19 year olds, account for nearly half of the gun related deaths from 0-19.

Anybody else notice the sudden increase in the use of the term “ghost gun” in news reports. Each time I see it used, especially without clarification, it is clearly for the purpose of pushing the anti-gun agenda. It is the same with using “automatic” rather than “semiautomatic” when describing firearms. While sometimes this is based on ignorance, more often not, it is to push the anti-gun agenda . . .

Actually the comparison is wrongly flawed as per actual impacting agent of death. The actual impact agent of death is a moving car, on purpose or accidental, the actual chassis or outer metal covering of the car itself. Howsomever, the actual agent of deaths in firearms scenarios is the bullet, not the firearm. The Firearm never moves at speed, never is isolated from human control, on purpose or [accidental may misfire on being dropped or mishandled] denoting purpose., never touches the victim. Ergo, the comparison is flawed by mistaking the whole for the part, a false argument. A moving car is like unto a giant moving bullet. A firearm is not a bullet. Ergo, according to the vehicle comparison, bullets should be banned, not firearms. This vehicle/firearm comparison claim would be thrown out in any court of law. You cannot compare apples picked from a tree and orange juice in a bottle. Whoever wrote this claim does not know basic logic and appears to be an idiot.
