According to the Washington Post, Trump and McCarthy spoke Thursday evening after the audio was leaked.
Trump is reportedly not upset with McCarthy and was “happy that McCarthy hadn’t followed through on what he had said privately.”
WaPo reported (emphasis ours):
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) hold on his status as the presumptive next GOP speaker was already tenuous. And on Thursday it seemed like it could slip further.
But how much?
For now, McCarthy appears to have avoided blowback from the top of the party. Many Republicans seem to be waiting for a cue from Trump about how to respond, though some have weighed in to defend or criticize McCarthy.
And The Post reports he spoke with Trump after the audio of the call was released, and Trump was not upset — indeed, he was even happy that McCarthy hadn’t followed through on what he had said privately.
Trump has been more accommodating of McCarthy than McConnell. They soon patched things up after McCarthy publicly blamed Trump for not quelling the Jan. 6 riot and even floated a historic censure resolution against Trump. McCarthy has also been more solicitous of Trump than McConnell has. And that could matter for the fate of his career.
Recent history is instructive when it comes to those with whom Trump is willing to reconcile.
On the one hand, Trump has been willing to overlook past criticisms — even harsh ones — provided the lawmaker in question proceeds to display the requisite obsequiousness. Trump recently endorsed Ohio Senate candidate J.D. Vance despite Vance having sharply criticized him in 2016 as unfit to be president.
And indeed, part of the reason Trump was reportedly not upset Thursday night was that McCarthy’s retreat showed the strength of Trump’s grip on the party.

Republican voters should demand tangible results and strict accountability from their elected officials. Anything less will only lead to a never ending string of disappointments and further damage to the republic. Its time for new and higher standards of representation.
“Trump...was “happy that McCarthy hadn’t followed through on what he had said privately.”
LOL! Mr. President, haven’t you figured it out yet, that McCarthy and most Congressional Republicans, don’t follow through on what they say publicly either.
Because Trump fails at enemy ID and knowing who his friends are.
In his narcissism he thinks his winning personality and bright ideas can make low-lifers around the world see the light.
It's his Achilles heel.
A very Godfatheresque comment by POTUS 45. He’ll keep McC. hanging in the wind for a while, until the time is right to endorse Jim Jordan for Speaker.
In many respects, draining the Swamp needs to start within the Republican Party itself. If we cannot remove the RINOs and backstabbers in the party there is no chance of ever cleaning out the rest of DC. There are too many sympathetic Swampers in the GOP that defend the Deep State. We have to get rid of them.
Revenge is a dish best served cold.
It's spring, and still way before midterms and even primaries, and wayyyy before the speaker vote next January.
It's also 2.5 years until the presidential elections - having McCarthy as speaker would suck at that point.
Though you didn't ask me, please tell us when, exactly, is it finally time to get self-serving lumps of $**T like McCarthy, out of our lives?
Serious question.
The Trump apologists are starting to look pathetic. If he runs 2024, I guess I’ll vote for him but damn if he isn’t getting cozy with the swamp.
So we should just keep re-electing back-stabbing weasels in perpetuity?
Thank-you.
He has always been cozy. The Anon’s kept everyone believing it was 5D chess.
McCarthy is his bitch now. Think of it, McCarthy wants nothing more than to be speaker… he’ll owe it to Trump.
Yet he withdraws his endorsement of Mo Brooks?
I can see Trump being somewhat magnanimous toward McCarthy-Luntz, at least at first. I’ll bet he is wanting to keep things in a state a limbo for now, seeing what he can get out of McCarthy to earn his way back. Art of the Deal in play here.
Remember Tommy: they told him he was going to be a made man before they whacked him. Trump may be playing chess by taking the high road now.
Yes. So true. Trump Campaign was just ordered to pay Omarrosa 1.3M in lawyer fee’s by a Judge and was in connection with a dispute over a book about her tenure as a White House advisor. She had signed an NDA and then wrote a book. Judge sided with Omarrossa. Another great pick by Trump.
When you heading to Ukraine
Trump is backing Loren Culp in Central Washington Congressional race. Former Washington police chief Loren Culp was one of several officers who dismissed a 17-year-old victim’s claims and threatened to arrest her for making a false report when she reported it in 2013. It was the girl’s step-father and Culp didn’t believe her. Other cops took the investigation and second accuser came forward and her step-father was convicted in 2015.
Culp is challenging Republican incumbent Dan Newhouse who joined Democrats in voting to impeach Trump for stoking the January 2021 Capitol riot.
Not buying it. This is just more proof that McCarthy is not who he wants us to believe he is. Just another Rino backstabber to conservatives.
