DeSantis' Nuclear Option: What Would Happen If Florida Revoked Disney's Special Governing Arrangement?

The passing of Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill and Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signing of it into law have escalated into a tense war between the increasingly solid red state and The Walt Disney Corporation, which continues to double down on its heavily pro-LGBT stance.

Disney has vowed to fight for the repeal of the law despite the fact that it reflects the values of parents throughout the state — as well as many of the company’s cast members (which is what Disney calls its employees).

But, just as we’ve expected from Florida’s governor, DeSantis isn’t simply rolling over — he’s fighting back.

On Friday, my PJ Media colleague Rick Moran wrote that DeSantis and other GOP legislators in the Sunshine State have mused about repealing the legislation that gave Disney its own governmental authority over the Walt Disney Word property over 50 years ago.

I predicted that this could be a nuclear option for DeSantis last month when I wrote, “If Disney did criticize Florida too harshly, the state could play hardball and threaten to revoke the legislation that created the company’s special quasi-governmental designation, the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which allows the company to operate with less interference from the state and county governments.”

Many of you have wondered what exactly that means, but first, let me give you a little background into Disney’s special governing authority, which is called the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

I’ve written tons about Disney history here at PJ Media and in my book Neon Crosses (which you really should buy). In Neon Crosses, I explained the concept behind the creation of the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

I'll bet there are some things in the Reedy Creek Improvement District that some don't want to see the light of day. I say go for it Gov. Make Orange County Great again. LOL!

Maybe Florida wants an enormous pedophile magnet located in the middle of their state.

Basically, the Florida Legislature of the 1960’S gave WDW free reign over their property in exchange for the theme park. They have their own security and basically are a reservation within the state not unlike an Indian reservation...............

Odd.
Most parents wouldn’t take their kid to a local park if they suspected a pervert was roaming around.
But they’d pay big money to take their kids to Disney park of perverts.

I look forward to learning more. If this Reedy Creek district gets special treatment, this should be publicized.

Was that special district created to recruit Disney to Florida, much as many locales give tax breaks or other incentives to businesses to locate somewhere?

Was Disney subsidized somehow to locate there?

No one ever dies in the Magic Kingdom! Have a heart attack in the Haunted Tower? You die in Kissimmie. Unless you have been ingested by an alligator…the death certificates rarely say Disney property.

I don’t think most parents have known that Disney harbors sexual deviant people.

Off topic, but I am so confused why Disney and the whole entertainment/liberal/media/LGBT lobby, weighed in on a law which restricts talking about these issues for young children in school.

The reactions are just so incredible. Someone on another site has a blog where the writer called Florida a “medieval state”. It was described as the first step back to the middle ages for “LGBT etc” peoples.

This law has only the most tangential effect on anyone in the “LGBT etc” community. The thriving gay scene in Key West and Miami is unaffected by this law. This law applies only to schools and only to the youngest children in such schools. Yet by the reaction you would swear that they were criminalizing sodomy or rolling back homosexual marriage. Geez, this reaction is just so over the top, considering what this law actually is intended to do.

Read elsewhere that the copyright for Mickey ends in 2024. In the past congress has voted to extend it.

Y’know, excluding Disney’s perv problem, it says some bad things about local government when having to rely on them for various services is a punishment...

Seems to me that anytime the state/fed government gives a special deal to a company, the company takes advantage of it. For instance, Twitter, Facebook, pharmaceutical manufactures, etc.

Revoke it and take it over.
-Fire the unions which protect the pedos.
-Cancel all union contracts
-Fire ALL employees and management in all the parks
-Setup extensive hiring/re-hiring process to vett all potential hires for predatory and deviant behavior
-Implement strict code of conduct and enforcement policies
-Yearly training in spotting and preventing human trafficking
-Hire only FL residents who pass full background and psychological profile exams.
-All employees must train and re-qualify yearly to retain employment.
-Divert proceeds to victims of child exploitation and abuse
-Only return the park to WDWC management when all conditions are met.
-Manage the park from then on in cooperation and ‘family safe’ licensing with the state.

Just for starters.

Revoke it immediately. Also go after Disney for the pedophile employees committing crimes on their property.
