“However, if they’re only carrying a conventional explosive warhead, I don’t see why it matters, other than as a vehicle field test.”
I think the ‘proper’ term would be “demonstration.” Not test.
These were not used in this instance to further any goal for the Russians in Ukraine. This was a message and demonstration of how “effective” they might be against a European capital.
If they start using these things all over the place, you never know when on of them has a nuclear tip. I think that is the purpose here—to get us guessing.
Russia announced on Saturday that it fired its much-vaunted hypersonic Kinzhal missile for the first time in a war setting, demolishing a Ukrainian underground arms warehouse in the country’s western sector.

Ukraine farmer denies he kept his chickens underground; has sale of whole, country-style, fried chicken.
—> Is this meant to kill Ukrainians or scare Biden?
I speculate this was a message to NATO countries that the hypersonic missile is operational and deployed… and can hit their countries.
I think the ‘proper’ term would be “demonstration.” Not test.

If you want to give a demonstration of your newly minted hypersonic missile in action, you do not do so against a static target and not against some farmer’s chicken coop.
Despite this story, there is no actual proof that any missile fired that day was some special maneuverable hypersonic missile.
If it was a demonstration, it failed. If it was a test, it failed miserably.
They are not interceptor missiles. Generally speaking all of their targets are static.
“I would not see it as a game changer,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said of the alleged launch.
So definitely a “game changer” then.
“Demonstration”.
Agree.
Which, is why the claims of a fake are also interesting. But, sooner or later, maybe now, they’ll have those operational.
Takes one to know one.
Dud <—> Lloyd Austin
It could be nothing, or might be something. Only thing I do know is I can not trust one word out one word out of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin mouth.
Anyone that believes this blithering idiot is a fool.
Would you admit that Russia and likely China have a weapon that can be used against military or naval targets and which we cannot defend against.
Stupid Pompous Ass SOB. Mask, Face Shield, BIG FAT GUT, all VAXXED up and still got COVID. I guess Full body Hazmat suit does not come in Ringling Bros. (Circus-Tent) size. Maybe Raytheon can make one for him.
“The hypersonic speed simply converts some of the initial fuel into higher than usual kinetic energy, which is added to the warhead’s explosive energy on impact.”
Useful against a hardened, subterranean target if it is very accurate.
Most nukes are set to detonate above the surface for maximum destruction.
The The Kh-47M2 Kinzhal is a air launched ballistic missile. It is not hypersonic like people think of it. It is only hypersonic in the upper atmosphere. So while it sounds impressive, its performance is not what marketing claims it is. Practically, its just another ballistic missile.
hypersonic just means it gets there faster.................
It was a propaganda operation trying to fool clueless general interest journalists and it looks like it has had some success.
That missile is NOT notable.
