Ya gotta feel bad for the South by Southwest folks. Just once a year, they want to get together to publicly examine their virtues, hold their shining intellects up for consideration and propose ways they can drag the rest of us mouth breathers up onto their enlightened plane. They want to talk about wind farms and vegan bologna and the “Latina Power Pipeline.”
Most years, it goes off without a hitch and they all jet home to fight for sustainable microbrews or more pansexual Nickelodeon characters. But this year, some knucklehead went and invited John Cleese to be on a panel. The decidedly unwoke Monty Python founder has caused much tutting among elites lately for insisting that people should have a sense of humor, and for defending J.K. Rowling’s heretical opinion about men being men and women being women. Predictably, Cleese ended up playing the proverbial skunk at the wine and locally sourced cheese party.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s disapproving report, the Friday evening panel was titled, “John Cleese in Conversation.” Dan Pasternack, the creator of “Portlandia” moderated the panel, which also included Jim Gaffigan, Dulcé Sloan and Ricky Velez. The group could only take so much of Cleese’s conversation.
Things were apparently okay until Sloan, a black woman correspondent for “The Daily Show,” brought up colonization (like ya do).
Cleese said people “forget the British Empire was the basic political unit of organization for 6,000 years – the British didn’t start [colonizing].” In other words, colonization and empire are as old as history itself.
He then opened a can of informed historical perspective on the session:

The punch in the turd bowl.
I love it. Here in Tulsa there is a huge reparations campaign going on versus the Race Riot years ago.
Digging up grave yards(not finding squat) and seeking reparations in the name of the game.
I’ll remember this little diddy if I ever decide to add a comment to our local news site. I’ll be royally flamed.
“Just a fly in the ointment, Hans. A monkey in the wretch. A pain in the ass.”
“A halfway house on a one-way street.”
Didn’t Rush say something like making a point with absurd examples or some such.
Mr. Cleese, I’d like you to meet Dr. Cosby. He can tell you some of what your future is likely to be.
Will blacks in Eastern Oklahoma demand the Cherokees pay reparations for the black slaves they owned, and hanged for the 1842 Slave Rebellion?
Blacks have already been kicked off the Cherokee roles as being true Cherokees.
They already tossed the Chappel ‘juicy’ line.
“…This is getting so uncomfortable,” asking if the panel was “a new Dave Chappelle special?” Chappelle too has a bad habit of saying things good progressives find icky…”
My Anglo side wants reparations from my Saxon side.
The Irish side is too drunk to care.
The Viking side is headed for the boats !
If you are only 1/2 black or 1/4 black do you get less money or write yourself a check?
Cleese is an ahole. I saw him in an interview where he called Republicans ‘’racist’’.
Cleese sounds like he is plagiarizing Thucydides' "Melian Dialogue."
Then there is also the fact that Britain was one of the first nations on the planet that outlawed slavery, and enforced that where they could.
I have less problem with an “equal opportunity offender” like Cleese than I do with someone like Obama or Aunty Maxine. At least Cleese points out we should ALL take a look at ourselves. If he’s wrong about me, then he’s wrong. I can take it.
But you are right - the Democrats have done more to harm minorities than anyone.
Cleese comes from a culture that for much of it’s historty was a rigid class system.
This guy calling Republicans racist is something I like to ram up his backside.
