On February 28th, Ukraine’s President, Prime Minister, and Speaker signed Ukraine’s official EU membership bid. There is a high chance that the application will be approved, with the process due to begin this month.
To understand the realistic timeframe of Ukraine’s legal and cultural re-integration into the European family, read European Pravda editor Sergiy Sydorenko’s article Ukraine’s EU Membership: When and How the Union Will Review the Bid.
Putin has always wanted Ukraine to be neutral. By invading the country in 2014, he aimed, among other things, to block Ukraine’s accession to NATO and the EU. Moscow has never really attempted to conceal this desire, mentioning it in its ultimatums, including during the peace talks held on February 28th.
Since 2014, Ukraine has tried to convince its western partners that the best way to stop Putin is to give Ukraine what he does not want it to receive.
Because of the war, some European partners started to realize that it is indeed so. Given the support it currently enjoys, Ukraine has a good chance of completing its bid successfully. More so since the politicians can no longer oppose the accession: Their voters would simply not support this.
Yet, in order to not be disappointed, we need to realize that the accession will not happen overnight. A detailed and sound procedure exists for acceding to the EU. It is impossible to join the EU or the common market without aligning all the standards with EU’s Law. Otherwise, it will destroy the internal market.
Accordingly, all the statements made by President Volodymyr Zelensky, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba, and others, demanding that Ukraine accede to the EU immediately are a way of attracting attention. This behavior makes total sense: One must ask for as much as possible to receive as much as possible.
The good news, however, is already in. The European Parliament voted Tuesday for granting Ukraine an official candidate status. The support was overwhelming with 637 in favor, 13 against, and 26 choosing to abstain. Although this decision does not have direct legal consequences, as the EP is not authorized to decide on any resolutions relating to the official accession to the EU (only EU member states are allowed to do so), it means a lot from a political perspective.
The negotiation on accession, in particular its legal dimension, will commence already this month. On 24-25th Brussels will host an EU Summit. Ukraine’s President will likely attend, either physically (should the war end) or online to discuss Ukraine’s EU membership in detail.
Buying insurance after the accident.
Membership into the EU doesn't automatically grant membership into NATO.
So if the Ukraine joins the EU , does that mean the EU will put boots on the ground to expel the Russians? Inquiring minds want to know.
“Buying insurance after the accident.”
Does the EU consider an attack on a EU member as an act of war against the EU?
If so how will EU respond?
I think this is where NATO will get pulled into a war.
No. It means that Ukraine can import French Goat Cheese duty-free.
I know the EU is not NATO.
But Ukraine is clearly looking for friends and will continue to look for more friends. I just think their timing is a little off.
No, actually all Ukraine wanted originally back in 2014 Putin’s puppet President Viktor Yanukovych was head of Ukraine.
In a way true, Ukraine is bread basket with much farm land. Putin kind of enslaved them with price controls to sell produce. Ukraine produced an estimated record 42 million metric tons of corn in 2021, according to the USDA. Another estimated record 30 million metric tons of wheat was expected as well as 17.5 million metric tons of sunflower.
If it has a deathwish.
You have no conscience.
I disagree, their timing is spot-on.
Ukraine has been trying to join both the EU and NATO for several years, but both Europe and the NATO nations (including the US) hesitated because it might upset Putin. Plus, Ukraine isn't exactly made up of choir boys and girls, so their systemic government corruption (see Burisma and Hunter Biden's laptop) also played against the EU extending membership to Ukraine.
But with Putin's War, the Ukraine is currently enjoying an overabundance of goodwill and sympathy, so the EU is looking favorably on granting them membership. Had Putin not invaded, I doubt that the EU would have done so.
NATO membership is another matter, because membership would legally and morally compel NATO member nations to join the fight against Russia directly, which would likely trigger a conventional WWIII, followed by a Nuclear WWIII when Russia gets their ass handed to them and it looks like they're down for the count.
Also keep in mind that being part of the EU means the EU forcing you to take in rapefugees (the #1 reason Brits voted for Brexit, though the media wants you to think it was other reasons). I'm sure part of Ukraine's begging to be in the EU will include a lot of pretending to take in rapefugees, but try to not really do it.
Oh I see.... so all the bloodshed is actually worth it.
If that's all you take away from the discussion, then yes.

Now is not the time for the EU to be admitting Ukraine. It is like waving a red flag in front of the bull Putin putting the EU and their protector, the US, right on his border. Kind of like admitting Cuba to the old USSR as its newest province right next door to us. They will have time for all that kabuki theater after the war is over when there are cooler heads in the room
What a load of BS! The people (the voters) are sick to death of the effing EU. They don't want more countries joining. It's the effing politicians who keep doing that.
Nothing a little Propaganda Blitz can't take care of.
The OP is certainly working hard at it...
