Well, the colonists were considered “rebels”, not a separate country like France having the king bring in an Austrian army.
During the Civil War. the Confederate Army would capture POWs who were German and couldn’t speak English, but had settled in the far north in states like Minnesota. They were mercenaries as well.
At one point, I think King’s Mountain, the Hessian were thoroughly defeated.
