we can have no way of knowing but
usually official business with the govt is NOT handled by phone because of the high odds of scams

I would at least check the return phone number carefully
before calling it

we get about 20 ripoff artist calls a week, and some can even fake a return number on your display

I dealt with their agents back in 1994 from the Philly Office. They were smart, sharp, and had a well balanced demeanor.It was over a matter involving evidence traced back to my ownership while they were investigating the Philly cops.

Due to the number of spam calls I’ve gotten, I set my phone to “do not disturb” mode, where if an incoming number is not on my favorites list, it doesn’t ring and goes direct to voicemail.

If they don’t leave a message, I assume spam.

I got a really strange call 5 days ago, from Newcastle. It looked like a foreign number, so I searched for Newcastle, and it came back “Newcastle upon Tyne”, in the far NE part of England. I did not answer it. The number had an extra digit,
62 1 4955 5XXX. I tried a couple of times to do a reverse search, but couldn’t find an international service to do that.

I got one a couple of months back. I answered it and it ended up being some girl trying to sell me solar panels. My wife got a call last month from the IRS number. It was seeing if she wanted to sell the house.

Figure it is scammers just using random numbers from the government to try to scare folks into answering.

I wouldn't sweat it myself. Like my mother used to say, "If it's important, they'll call back." ;)

It is trivially easy to spoof a phone number. Don’t fall for it.

If it were a legitimate call from anyone, they would have left a voicemail.

No voicemail, they don’t want you calling them back because they don’t want you to know who they are.
